I don't post often anymore, but I thought I should today.
Thank you, veterans.
In Loving Memory of My Father Who Lost His Battle With Lung Cancer on Sept. 2, 2008
I regret that I never took enough time to talk to my dad about his Army experiences. I only heard stories here and there, like how he got into the Army in the first place. Apparently, he'd been running a still to make moonshine (for my UK friends, American moonshine is so not hard cider), which was of course illegal. Add to that that he was underage...and so the local police were after him. Running from the law, he got his older brother to sign his enlistment papers, lying to say that my dad was 18 years old.
He once said that the moment he realized that he was "in the Army now" was when he was handed a rifle and ordered to stand guard at the Czech border, along with being given orders about when to shoot approaching people.
My dad may not have fought in any wars (just barely missing out on getting sent to Vietnam), but he's still a worthy veteran to me.
Miss you, daddy.
