It wasn't that Jack couldn't sleep, it was just that he couldn't seem to get any deeper than a doze.
He blamed the week.
Okay, yeah, it had been the first week of actual classes, but the learning curve had struck with a vengeance that seemed wholly unwarranted. In one week he'd learned that his usual method of dealing with unhappy people - which was avoid them or palm them off on somebody else - didn't work if the person in question was someone he cared about. That
Ethics was going to be hellish, and
not just for him, and
Constant Vigilance was going be fun,
even if he couldn't call the Doctor Doc.
He'd learned that both Sam
and Cedric were happy to have him be Jaye's Portable Jacktm,
which, along with painting his toenails pink, had seemed to make her feel better, and that any day that started with
flirting at the ocean and
ended at the bar was pretty much always going to be a good one. Especially when you tossed
Pantslessness,
teasing Evie, and
liberating signs into the mix.
And he'd
learned that Sam loved him. Which was the most startling thing of all.
With that last thought winding through his brain, he mangled the pillow until it was comfortable, and, regretting that he was alone, rolled onto his back to stare at the ceiling until he finally fell asleep.
It took awhile.
