while in mexico at first i saw the beggers as just being lazy or hustlers. it took me a while to realize that not every country is like america where we have equal employment opportunities and welfare systems. it makes me angry to think that people go out and spend tons of money on a lake house that they can go to on the weekends when they can take that money and buy like 10 houses in mexico where these people can comfortably live instead of building these little shacks out of garbage or living on the streets.
also i was asked at some point of the trip what i thought about the poverty of the areas we were in and the first thing that popped into my head was that these people aren't in poverty at all... we are. they know what it means to love each other and be a part of a community and how to love and trust in God. they have little to no material possessions. they have nothing yet they appear content. we just have all this stupid shit that we obviously don't need. it's absurd. we have more to gain from the poor than we could ever give them
