Thursday events

We had some car weirdness going on, and Mindy thought she was supposed to work last night. So, since I had caused her driver's door window to come off the track even more, I offered to drive her to "Work". Dropped her off, was on my back back to work when she called and told me she wasn't actually on the schedule (she had called and asked a coworker the day before when her next shift was). The plan was originally for me to finish my workday, then the usual Thursday - yoga and Master's swim, then pick her up. Only now I had to pick her up when I finished work, which means I MISSED YOGA! I would almost rather have dental work than miss yoga. Dang! I was, however, early for Master's swim but still couldn't get in the pool yet cause the previous class hadn't finished. Chad was already there (we share a lane) and D'an joined us in the other lane as I was finishing the 300 yd warmup. On my last length of the 100 backstroke, I started hearing this weird sound. Since my ears were underwater I wondered what the heck it was - a buzzer going off? Coach Steve piping whale singing into the pool? someone pulled a fire alarm? it kind of sounded like a very forceful nose-blowing at fairly regular intervals. Soon as I got to the end of the pool, coach was standing directly over me saying, "GET OUT OF THE POOL NOW!" and pointed to the deep end of lane 1. I obliged, D'an got out but Chad was doing f/s and flip turns so he didn't see coach standing there yelling. The two lifeguards yelling at him got his attention and he got out. On the deck at the deep end of lane 1 was a very limp woman laying on her left side with that red floaty-thingy that lifeguards have, and two lifeguards assisting her. Finally we heard her start coughing and coughing and coughing. At least she was alive. It took a good five minutes or so to get her up and able to walk and she apologized to us as she walked to the dressing room. As if a five minute delay in a Master's workout is a big inconvenience to us. Poor thing! I kept asking, "What was that sound? an alarm?" and my lanemates didn't know what I was talking about. Apparently I'm the only one who heard it. Coach finally told me she had been treading water at the deep end (apparently not very successfully), panicked and started screaming. He thinks what I heard was probably breathing in water between screams. I never heard that sound before but you can bet I won't ever forget it. There was some good news of the day, though, that fleece lined swim parka I bought last weekend was really appreciated going from the pool to the car!
