Having been defeated by Kurotsuchi Mayuri, Szayel Aporro spent his time during the war locked in a prison of agony from which there was no escape, a fact that he doesn't care to be reminded of to this day. Failure did not come easy for the Octava Espada, and though he was not punished by Aizen, he had a difficult time coping with the fact that he was not as perfect as he had once thought.

For quite a while after being revived by Inoue Orihime he lived a reclusive existence. He spent most of his days cooped up in his laboratory, emerging only when required to do so for meetings or when his presence was requested by Aizen. The early days were spent recreating his fallen fracción as well as dabbling in a few other projects here and there. Anything to keep his mind occupied. In a way, he had been scarred by his ordeal. His image of himself as a perfect being had been tattered, and at first he frequently brooded over this, sometimes for hours on end. Later, he reviewed the battle over and over looking for ways to improve his performance to ensure he would never suffer such a defeat again. When alone or with his fracción he tended to often be angry and bitter, but he worked to maintain a fairly normal outward appearance to the world at large. He didn't want everyone to know that his defeat had affected him so, and in truth, he was grateful to have escaped with his life and his rank, even if he was angry over his loss.

His first major project after being revived was taking part in the creation of the Kounisshimou, though he strongly objected to the collaboration between the 12th Division of Shinigami and Las Noches, believing that he and his own could handle the responsibility of the project all on their own. Aizen did not waver to his objections, leaving him to seethe in silence at having to work with those who had done him so much wrong. He did his part with as little communication as necessary and desired to complete the project as quickly as possible. If he never had to work with another Shinigami again after that, he felt it would be too soon.

Despite his initial reactions, the bitter taste of defeat did slowly fade from his mouth, leaving him to become more like his old self again. He continued to work as he always had, both on orders and projects pertaining to his own interests. However, he also continued to resent Kurotsuchi Mayuri and Nemu in the worst possible way. He wanted them dead, and though he had not yet been permitted to execute this task himself, he vowed that if he ever had the chance and thought he could get away with it, he would destroy them in the most horrible fashion he could imagine.
