I'm not TOO aware of the news going on around me. I haven't sat down to watch a TV in a while. Not just glance through. I mean REALLY watch. What I AM aware of is this.....the nation has forgotten about the Gulf Coast.
I come in contact with people from all over the country on a daily basis. Minnesota, Vermont, North Dakota, Kansas, Nebraska, and various other places. They volunteer alongside me. The first words out of their mouths are as follows: "I didn't think it was really this bad down here."
Yes folks, it IS that bad down here. At the present pace, the relief effort JUST IN MISSISSIPPI is going to take at LEAST 8 years. That is solid 24/7/365 work. Remember, that is JUST in MISSISSIPPI.
The rest of the nation thinks this place is back to normal. It isnt. It wont be for a while. We have 200 volunteers a week coming through the center here (which happens to be the ONLY volunteer organization currently working on the Gulf Coast). All of this because the Red Cross and FEMA have pulled out of the area, because the government has decided that this area ISNT a disaster area anymore....therefore, no government aid. Bull.
I see people who have lost EVERYTHING, and have yet to be housed anywhere. We feed them, assist them with bills, and keep their hopes up. The government needs to step up and complete this task, leave Iraq alone for a while, and take care of our own people
I HAVE NEVER BEEN QUITE SO PLEASED WITH A POST---IT SAYS EVERYTHING OUR HEARTS HAVE BEEN--PEACE OUT MY WONDERFUL'S
