Lights will guide you home and ignite your bones

[They'd been walking for days. Meals were scarce, but they managed. Mostly, they didn't talk; it was all they could do to keep warm without uncovering their faces ( Read more... )

[The snow had seen fit to lighten up, but only because the sky had cleared and the stars had come out to make it all the colder. By the time they're inside and out of the wind, Calavicci was unpacking their collective wares, trying to get to the blankets in the mix.] Here're the blankets.

[Kara nods, going about the routine they'd silently developed. Blankets, light the candle, open a can. Cook. By the time a can of tomato soup was heating slowly, Kara retreated to her half of the blankets where even hunger wasn't sufficient to keep her eyes open.]

[Al was worried. More than worried, though he was trying his hardest not to show that part of him. Kara looked sick. Sicker by the day, and while Calavicci had mentioned stopping a few times, his companion had urged them to keep moving.]

[He thought to wake her up to eat, but figuring she was much better off sleeping, he took the can off the heat and set it aside.]

[Gathering his blankets, he moved over to his traveling companion and laid them carefully over her. She could shed them if she got hot, but from the looks of things, she was cold enough to tremble.]

[Al crouched, reaching a hand out to feel for fever.]

[Vaguely aware of being touched, Kara opens her eyes. She blinks, trying to reconcile the twin Al's hovering over her into a single image.] D'I miss dinner?

[He smiles (because that's what you do when you're worried about someone and you don't want them to know how badly.)]

No, you haven't missed it. Just finished, but if you wanna sleep, it'll keep until morning. [As long as she keeps until morning, that is. Granted, Calavicci doesn't think she's knocking on death's door quite yet, but if they don't fix the problem soon, who could say what the next several days would hold.]

[She shakes her head, the motion making her cough until her whole body shakes.

When it subsides, she peers at him as though daring him to comment.] No, I... we should eat somethin'.

[He nods, not making comment, but eyebrows knitting anyway. Getting to his feet from the crouch makes him feel much older than he is, but the cold's a large contributor. Al comes back with the can, sitting down on the floor next to the blanket mummy.] Here, you drink what you can. I can always make something more. Or find something more.

[She's too tired and too hungry to argue, so she slurps down about half before breaking down into another bought of chest rattling coughs. Unable to eat any more, she hands the can over.]

[He sets the can aside, feeling all-together helpless knowing that she's sick.]

Are you warm enough? Do you think you'll be able to sleep? [Standing, he strips off his dark wool jacket and hurriedly balls it up to create a pillow.] Y-you can use this -- it'll help keep your head up. [There are more words there than he's used in a while. Worried Al is worried.]

[Kara uses up the last of her strength refusing the coat.] Take some blankets, too. [Cough, cough, cough.] No sense in both of us gettin' sick.

'M not stayin'. [Funny, he didn't say that too loudly.] But I'll be back soon, so I won't need 'em.

[Kara's just this side of delirious, so she nods agreeably, burrowing into the nest of blankets.]

[Calavicci's thankful Kara doesn't bother to argue (for once,) but he does take back his coat since she didn't seem to need or want to use it. He stood, suits up, and leaves Thrace to sleep.]

[When he finally returns several hours later, Al's ruffled, bloodied, covered in soot, but all-together whole. He carries a half-filled grocery bag to Kara's side, kneeling down and digging through to the bottom for some pills in a bottle.]

[Kara half hears someone nearby and her body goes on alert, rousing her from a troubled, feverish sleep.

She blinks up to see Al hovering there and relaxes a bit.] All right?

[Besides looking somewhere between spooked and tired, he's moving all right and most of the blood was localized around his hand and his forehead.]

Yeah. Take these. [He shook three sooty pills in his palm, two of which were identical.]

[Too exhausted to argue and not exactly up to caring whether what he had on offer would kill her as death would be preferable, she puts all the three pills in her mouth and dry swallows them, wincing at the pain.] Thanks.
