I've made a little bit of progress about the use of running water as a defensive tactic. It seems to only bother certain creatures - most notably are creatures that live closer to the cemetery. Least effective seems to be creatures that live within water normally. Understandable, to be honest.
It might be an idea to divert a section of the river so that it flows through the town. Of course, with the tools we have, such a feat would be extremely difficult...]
