Tips for a better sailboat race (any sailboat race)...
1) Make sure you get the Sailing Instructions for the race. They have a lot of good information in them...
2) Know the course you are supposed to sail...
3) Know where all the marks are in the course you are supposed to sail... Don't just sail around looking for them...
4) Know if you are allowed to use the pole on the jib...
5) Know the starting sequence...
6) Have a stopwatch on board... It helps you time the starting sequence...
That being said, we came in second, mainly because we only followed Tip #2... We were only 15 seconds behind the winner, but 3:11 behind on corrected time...
But it was fun anyway... and I got to race with a bunch of friends I haven't seen in years...
and, oh yea... It was a pirate race... ARRR!!!
