I had booked tickets for this yonks ago, and was glad I did as we were sitting quite close to the front, so got a good view of the blood, gore and fishnets...
For the uninitiated this is a rock musical by Steve Steinman, who won a competition some years ago as a Meatloaf cover singer. This show was based on a pretty simple story: vampire lord is bored with his vampire queen and seeks new bride. Vampire lord finds new bride and brings her into the fold. Scorned vampire queen gets jealous and destroys the new bride... So its not a deep story but what matters is the music and the presentation.
Firstly the presentation - the costumes are great and the effects decent enough if a bit cliched at times but heck, that's expected! Toyah was the guest star for the show, and plays the vampire queen and pulled it off marvelously. There were several supporting actors and dancers. The dancers were certainly great eye candy for me, often writhing nicely in their cages... Fortunately there was equally nice eye candy for Sara in the form of the guitarists, who ensured she always had something pretty to look at...
And that brings me onto the music which was great - lots of 80s rock, which was done very well - the band was pretty impressive, and used 4 vocalists over the various songs which ensured they could cover a variety of vocal styles. The set song list was: Thunder Struck, Killer Queen, Live & Let Die, Hero, School's Out, Since You've Been Gone, Total Eclipse Of The Heart, Rebel Yell, Hells Bells, Sweet Child Of Mine, White Wedding, Poison, Dead Ringer For Love, Changes, Final Countdown. And then some encores not really part of the show: Jump, I Love Rock N Roll, We Will Rock You, Devil Gate Drive, Bat Out Of Hell, Knocking On Heaven's Door. So yes, this is completely back to the 80's. In fact I haven't felt as 80s as this since seeing Fatal Smile support Lordi in Islington earlier this year.
You'll have to agree its an impressively long song list, and a long show at about 2.5 hours, with an interval. We had a great night out, and enjoyed it a lot. It was entirely unpretentious, just plain good fun, and a great night out! Good stuff. Apparently its been touring for years, so if you haven't seen it before / recently then consider this a recommendation!
