Chapter 34

Lee sat with Aria on the rug in the living room, trying to put together some kind of toy with an infinite number of plastic parts that Bill had gotten for his granddaughter. They had also let Hera open one of her gifts, and the girl was excitedly flipping through a book on Earth animals that Kara had gotten her.

Kara was the only one still at the table with Helo and Sharon, and Lee stole a glance at her as she finished her second plate. The ring in his pocket felt hot against his skin even through layers of fabric.

This was a bad idea.

Things were so good between them, and he was going to ruin it all by proposing and scaring her off. Maybe he should wait until she proposed to him; seemed to have worked for Sam.

Then again, it hadn’t really worked for Sam.

Lee sucked a deep breath in as Aria started to babble tiredly at him. He put the toy down and picked her up, walking back and forth in the area between the dining room and the living room, running his hand up and down his daughter’s back and trying to get her to go to sleep.

He’d learned quickly during his time alone with Aria that when she started to babble like this, it usually meant she was tired. And sure enough, it only took a couple of minutes of walking before Aria was drooling against his neck.

Kara’s eyes met his for a few seconds as he walked towards the couch to put Aria down, and he saw something there that he hadn’t quite seen before; before he could try to figure it out, Helo moved to block Kara from Lee’s view.

Shrugging it off, Lee placed his dozing daughter on the couch next to where Hera was still flipping through the book. The fireplace was keeping the area more than warm enough, but Lee still pulled one of the afghans from the back of the couch and covered Aria. He glanced at Hera, offering the other end of the afghan and she lifted her arms and the book so he could cover her legs.

Satisfied, Lee moved back to Aria’s unfinished toy on the floor; he was tempted to go grab his father from the kitchen to help him put this monstrosity together. He wasn’t even sure how they were supposed to get this back to Montana once it was assembled. Lee glanced back at the dinner table where he saw Karl revealing a shiny bottle of Ambrosia; Olympian Single Malt from the looks of it.

“Found an entire box of these when we checked a blocked-off causeway; if I remember correctly, this was one of your favorites during the Academy,” Helo filled the glass in front of Kara with a double-shot of liquor before reaching for a glass for himself.

“Oh no, that’s okay,” Kara said, pushing the filled glass toward her friend and looking greener than Lee had ever seen her. And he’d seen her through more hangovers than he could count.

Helo glanced back at Lee, and Lee shrugged, not sure what that was about either.

“Are you serious?” Helo asked, not masking the hurt in his voice. “Wait-you’re not…” he trailed off.

Lee’s eyes searched for answers in Kara’s expression, but she was staring at Helo with wide eyes.

“Oh, congratulations!” Sharon finally offered, reaching over Karl’s form to hug Kara.

“Thanks,” Kara muttered, obviously uncomfortable, and Lee felt even more confused than he’d been a minute before.

“What?” he finally asked, standing up from his spot.

Bill and Laura chose that moment to emerge from the kitchen.

“What’s going on?” Bill asked as he saw Helo staring at Kara with his mouth agape.

Kara pursed her lips, eyes growing even wider. “I… I’m pregnant. Again,” she added uncomfortably.

Several pairs of eyes turned to Lee as he let out a surprised whimper, but he was too busy staring at Kara, who wouldn’t meet his eyes.

Lee did the only thing he could think of: he walked to the table and dropped the ring in front of her. Her fingers reached for it, and she studied it carefully before realization finally sunk in and she let go of it like it was molten lava.

She was gone from the table so quickly, that he barely had time to grab the ring before following her.

[Five Years and Eight Months Later]

Kara watched as her baby hesitantly dove into the pond after his older sister. Hermes was five, not exactly a baby anymore, but he was the youngest and Kara was amazed at how fast he was growing.

It was late Summer, Kara's favorite season, because they could be outside all day and never be cold. The kids loved to swim at the pond by the house, and Kara loved watching them. There was such a freedom at being able to come and go as they pleased, that even after almost ten years since she landed on this planet, it still amazed her. She loved the Galactica she always would, but this was home now.

The sun was an hour away from hiding behind the mountains, and the horizon was just starting to change shades. As she watched from the ground, on her familiar blanket, she almost wished she had her art supplies with her. The truth was that the custom easel Lee had given her was so beautiful, she was always afraid of breaking it by taking it anywhere.

Lee. She missed him, but he was still going to be gone for another week. If the kids didn't love the farm so much, especially in the summer, she would've taken them to Colorado to visit Lee by now.

She did go to Colorado a couple times a year. He, sometimes with Sam's assistance, always managed to talk her into doing special lectures to new pilots. For those rare occasions, she got to be her old self again, and it was always a heady feeling... but she always had to remind herself she'd changed, grown as a person.

And every time she got back to the farm, she knew she was where she belonged, with her friends, children and their imperfectly perfect family.

Chapter35

Kara was fuming as she reached the guest bedroom. It was easy to assign blame for whatever had just transpired in the dining room; it was Helo’s fault for bringing ambrosia.

Kara cursed the day she answered Lee’s phone and heard the Old Man’s voice on the other end. She could've been in Montana right now, hiding, like she'd done for so long.

She started to grab her suitcase from under the bed; she wasn’t sure where she was going to go. Maybe she could sleep on the couch, or get a hotel room somewhere-all she did know is that she was not about to spend the night with Lee after the stunt he’d just pulled.

She’d gone in the bathroom to retrieve her things and didn’t hear Lee until he’d closed the bedroom door.

“What are you doing, Kara?” he asked, looking as upset as she felt.

“I’m leaving,” she announced, feeling even angrier at having to explain it to him.

“No, you’re not,” he countered, zipping her suitcase shut and pushing it to its previous spot under the bed.

She couldn't help but think that he'd obviously forgotten who he was dealing with if he thought he'd get away with something like this. She gritted out her reply, word by word: “Yes. I. Am.”

Lee blocked the way to the bed when she tried to get her things again.

“What the frak did you expect after you proposed to me in front of everyone?” she asked when he wouldn’t budge.

“What the frak did you expect after you broke out the news you’re pregnant in front of everyone?” he spat back at her.

She grunted in frustration, moving away from the heat and the anger that were coming off his body in spades.

He pulled her back by tugging at her arm, and there were about five hundred moves she could think of that would break the fingers that were loosely holding her.

She should’ve known they wouldn’t be able to keep from frakking things up between them. There were only two things they were good at as a couple: frakking and fighting.

The tension between them was so thick you could cut through it with a knife, and when Kara finally met his eyes for the first time since her announcement downstairs, she remembered that frakking and fighting had also never been mutually exclusive things between them. His mouth crashed into hers so hard she was sure it would bruise, and she returned the kiss with the same amount of ferocity. She knew he was just trying to keep her from leaving, because it was what Lee did when he thought he was going to lose her, but she didn't care at the moment.

The wall of the bedroom was unforgiving as her back was suddenly pressed against it. Kara had been too busy undoing her fly to realize Lee had moved the two of them. His lips were still attacking hers, teeth as sharp as the words she was sure he was holding back.

She wanted to go back in time and erase the stupid scene downstairs, but she couldn’t, so she tried to give in to the heady sensation of Lee’s body pressing against almost every inch of her. He finally broke their kiss and helped her with her pants and underwear, pushing both of them to the ground with determination before he stood up and undid his own fly. Kara didn’t bother to wait for him to remove his clothes - she just reached in and pulled his erection out.

Lee’s strong hands pulled at the back of her thighs and she wrapped her own arms around his shoulders; two seconds later he entered her, filling her completely. She panted against the skin of his neck, trying to keep quiet; she knew she was close already and it wasn’t going to take much to push her over the edge.

Lee wrapped his arms around her more tightly, holding her hips in place as he moved in and out of her. Her fingernails dug into his back when she came, barely stifling a scream. Lee didn’t stop his movements as she climaxed, the thrusts drawing out her orgasm for so long she felt lightheaded.

Kara gasped as one of his hands moved away from where it had been cradling her hips; gravity did its work and Kara dropped an inch down the wall, and then she felt Lee’s erection tugging at her clit every time he pulled out and pushed back in.

Her second orgasm surprised her, her leg muscles spasming so hard that it took a lot of concentration to keep hanging onto Lee’s shoulders. He wasn’t too far behind this time, and he came inside her with a groan, his seed three months too late to make a difference.

Her legs felt unsteady as they unlocked from behind his back and returned to firm ground.

“We really need to find a better way to end our fights,” he pointed out.

Kara arched an eyebrow at him. “It doesn't get much better than this, you know?”

Lee nodded, touching his forehead to hers. “I mean, something more rational and less primal. You know, healthy.”

She couldn't really argue. He had a point, even if she wasn't sure they'd ever get there.

“Are you really pregnant?” There was no accusation or even doubt in his voice, just amazement.

Kara bit her lip as she nodded. “Not sure how far along, about three or four months. Although if I had to bet my money on it, I’d say that Viper in Colorado did the trick,” she felt her cheeks redden at the memory. Not much could make her blush, but the idea of conceiving a child in a Viper seemed to do the trick.

And then Lee surprised the hell out of her by smiling smugly. He pulled away from her body, dropping to his knees in front of her and if she hadn’t just been thoroughly frakked, she would’ve probably gotten aroused by the sight. Lee’s target, however, wasn’t his usual choice, but her expanding stomach.

“How could I’ve missed this?” he brushed his cheek against her skin, raising goosebumps.

“Well, I’m not
really showing yet,” Kara explained. “I've mostly put on weight ‘cause Mary won’t stop feeding me.”

Lee stood up again, his lips moving to captures hers. She returned the passionate kiss, quickly getting lost in the sensation. She should’ve seen it for what it was, a distractive measure, but it wasn’t until she felt smooth metal sliding around her finger that she broke the kiss.

“What the--?” she started to ask, but Lee pressed his lips against hers for another kiss.

“We don’t have to set a date,” Lee explained.

“I’m not getting married again, Lee,” she argued, fighting the urge to pull her hand away from his.

Lee’s eyes studied her in that way that meant he was about to give in but just a little. “Okay, we don’t have to get married at all, but would you at least wear the ring?”

“That makes no sense,” she pointed out, her eyes starting to drift to the ring on her finger. She’d seen it at the table, but she’d been too puzzled by it to actually notice the details, like the nice weight of the platinum and how there were small diamonds encrusted in the metal all around the band. She’d never been big on precious stones of any kind, but it was kind of breathtaking if she stared at it for too long. Her hand dropped to her side as if it weighted a ton. “I’ll think about it,” she conceded with a sigh.

The way Lee beamed at her made her knees weak.

[Four Years and Four Months Later]

Lee entered the house through the kitchen door, recognizing the smells coming from the kitchen-pot roast and mashed potatoes, which had grown to be one of his favorite Earth dishes.

“Lee!” Mary exclaimed in surprise. “Thought you’d gone to the mall with Kara and the kids.”

“Nah, I just dropped them off,” Lee explained as he poured himself a glass of water. “Where’s Jess?”

“Went to pick up his sister in Helena; one of her classes ran too late for her to make it on the bus here.”

“I could’ve picked her up,” Lee offered. “Hermes loves going to Helena.”

“Don’t worry about it, you just got back in town,” Mary pointed out. “And Jesse likes to spend hours grilling his sister about college life, especially when she can’t run away.”

Lee laughed, taking a seat around the kitchen island. “Yeah, I remember when I would pick up Zak from the Academy when we went home for the holidays…”

Mary smiled. “Some things are the same, no matter the planet,” she reminded him.

Lee nodded.

“Now what is it you’re worried about?” she asked pointedly.

“How do you know I’m worried about something?” Lee asked, impressed.

“I’ve known you and Kara long enough.”

Lee sighed. “I haven’t gotten Kara an anniversary gift yet.”

Mary stopped chopping onions and looked at him with compassion. “Cutting it close, aren’t ya?”

“She’s not the easiest person to shop for,” Lee pointed out.

“Good point,” Mary conceded.

“She doesn’t like any of the typical anniversary presents,” Lee added. “So I’ve got thirty minutes to figure something out.”

“Maybe a vacation?” Mary suggested.

“Where to?” Lee asked, intrigued. Other than New York, Colorado and Montana, they hadn’t done a lot of traveling.

“There are plenty of places on Earth to visit… perhaps she would like to visit Greece. They have temples in honor of all of Kara's gods,” Mary pointed out.

“Is it nice?” Lee inquired.

“Go up to the computer room and take a look… there are plenty of cruises to go on, lots of ruins to see.”

Lee grinned at Mary, liking the idea more and more by the second. “Thank you, Mary!” he said, kissing his friend on the cheek before running up as ordered.

Four months later, Lee held Kara's hand as she prayed amongst the ruins where the Temple of Artemis had once stood on Earth.

Chapter 36/37

A/N: Feedback is ♥. The show and RL killed my muse for a little while, but like Kara, she's come back... unfortunately, also like Kara, she's having problems re-adjusting, so I still don't know when this will be done. I do have two more chapters to post though, and those will probably be online tomorrow or Sunday.
