Ooh, it's been a while since I did an ep reaction. I am so lazy
I think this one of the best episodes I've seen from SPN in a long time. Wonderful plot device, recurring characters used carefully and it actually felt like we got to know the journey they've been on while Sam and Dean have been to hell and back.
I was a bit meh about 5.01 but this was great! Some random things:
- Oh how I love pretty, pretty boys glaring at each other. Some fangirls are moaning about how Sam and Dean fighting and the boys being apart breaks their heart and they cannot watch the show if they are not together.... I LOVE it. I think tension is facinating and it is a natural progression for the show to explore this. Let's face it, there was a simaliar idea in season 4, but instead of having Ruby sandwiched in the middle, it's just Sam and Dean. AWESOME
- Dean offered Sam the Impala! This = Dean's code for I love you. Seriously, my brain went "phew, that could have been worse, thank god he offered it up, so Sam can think about that when he is busy brooding away"
- Really loved Jo and Ellen. I hope we see more of them. I never had a huge issue with either characters. Possibly because I got in SPN at the start of season 2, I had not fallen in love with just Sam and Dean then missed a summer of fans going ballastic about spoilers that Dean was getting a love interest, so I just took it at face value when Jo was introduced and didn't have major issues with her.
- Heh to Dean's reaction towards giving up the amulet. Oh Jensen, you play everything so perfectly.
- Cool x-ray
Also, I may get shot and run out of fandom for saying this, but I think it's quite interesting that they have sidelined Bobby for a while and I actually really look forward to Dean and Sam being independant. I did find it a bit weird that they were perfectly fine hunting and figuring things out and then as some point, probably around Season 3, they could never figure shit out and always had to rely on Bobby.
This, and a few other things makes me feel like Kripke, Gamble etc are editing out and filtering all the detris that obscured the heart of the real show, paring it down to the fundamental elements we've seen in various ways over 4 seasons and will just focus on that. I hope this episode bodes well for the rest of the season.
