I could wait a thousand hours
Stay the same in sun and showers
Pick apart a hundred flowers
Just to be quiet

XII - HANGED MAN
. Letting Go . Reversal . Suspension . Sacrifice .
The Hanged Man is one of the most mysterious cards in the tarot deck. It is simple, but complex. It attracts, but also disturbs. It contradicts itself in countless ways. The Hanged Man is unsettling because it symbolizes the action of paradox in our lives. A paradox is something that appears contradictory, and yet is true. The Hanged Man presents to us certain truths, but they are hidden in their opposites.
The main lesson of the Hanged Man is that we "control" by letting go - we "win" by surrendering. The figure on Card 12 has made the ultimate surrender - to die on the cross of his own travails - yet he shines with the glory of divine understanding. He has sacrificed himself, but he emerges the victor. The Hanged Man also tells us that we can "move forward" by standing still. By suspending time, we can have all the time in the world.
In readings, the Hanged Man reminds us that the best approach to a problem is not always the most obvious. When we most want to force our will on someone, that is when we should release. When we most want to have our own way, that is when we should sacrifice. When we most want to act, that is when we should wait. The irony is that by making these contradictory moves, we find what we are looking for.
Reversed: as the Hanged Man card usually involves sacrifice and insight, the inverse would be a refusal to surrender what needs to be surrendered, or see things from a new perspective. In this regard, the reversed card is the assertion of the ego, stubborness, selfishness. The querent is clinging to who and what they are, all that they have, refusing to give it up even though the exchange could transform them and help others.
Name: Heather Richards.
Gender: Female.
Blood Type: A.
Birthday/Sign: December 28th . Capricorn.
Age: 17.
Occupation/Grade: Twelfth grade.
Room: 603 [ Roommate:
Zoe Katsaros Lynne Sawyer ]
PB:
Tsubasa Hanekawa from Bakemonogatari. Appearance: Heather has long very dark brown to black hair, which she usually wears in one or (usually) two braids, tied up with ribbons at the end. On very rare occasions she just wears it down. She also wears hairclips to get her bangs out of her face. Her eyes are purple and she always wears glasses; she can barely see without them because she has bad eyesight. Her current pair is red-rimmed and fairly large.
Fashion wise Heather isn't too interesting. She wears the school uniform normally, without any trinkets or accessories to spice it up. She wears the gray skirt which is still fairly long compared to the limit on how short it is, it reaches to below her knees. Outside of her school uniform she wears clothes that could still be seen as a school uniform all the same because they aren't very interesting; usually grey, brown or dark-toned long skirts and blouses. Sometimes she wears simple dresses as well, although it's nothing extravagant.
Personality: She's a very introverted person. To some people her outward behavior may come off as distant, cold or uncaring, since she hardly meddles with other people or things she's not involved with; she'd much rather read a book on her own somewhere than to get caught up in all of everyday's chaos. It isn't that she's being so distant on purpose though, it's just that she's very shy and doesn't dare to approach other people really easily. She's easily scared or intimidated by other people. When she does manage to get close to a person she's very friendly and helpful, but on the other hand she tends to depend on said person a lot too (sometimes to a point where it's slightly creepy). Heather's incredibly loyal and is willing to do anything or sacrifice anything for the people she cares about. She isn't very good in social situations because of her lack of common sense of social things and her awkward sense of humor.
Heather's very intelligent and practical, she's quick in thinking up solutions for things. She's especially knowledgeable because of the amount of books she has read in her life and she still loves to read new books and learn new things all the same. Because of all this she is one of the best students of her year, if not of the whole school. She always strives to work hard because she wants to make her parents proud, but sometimes gets so absorbed in her work that she doesn't even notice that she's wearing herself out. She tends to think of other people's feelings before her own, usually doing what other people tell her or expect of her instead of what she wants.
Although she's intimidated most by social situations, it's not difficult to scare her in general either. The slightest thing can already make her go and hide behind a book. Losing her glasses is a main point of panic as well. Heather's not very good at confronting her problems and therefore tends to run away from problems and avoid them in general. She tends to be a bit of a pessimist, the glass is usually half empty for her. It's because she looks practically at problems and doesn't want to make things seem easier or better than they are because of optimism.
History: Heather is an only child and her parents are both doctors; they even met each other through the hospital before Heather was born. They've always been busy with their work and so Heather was usually entrusted to a babysitter. She was never good at making friends at school, it already started at kindergarten and only continued from there. Instead of playing outside with the other children she preferred to stay inside and read a book or - if she had to go outside - sit in the shade and read all the same. Sometimes the other kids teased her for always just reading, which only made her more embarrassed around other people.
When she was old enough to stay home alone without a babysitter Heather usually spent the afternoons reading or doing homework. She always tried her best at school so she would get good grades, then she could show them to her mother and father so that they would be proud. Back then she fully believed that if only she would try a little harder at school her parents would come home and spend some more time with her instead of only coming home either late at night or randomly for a few moments. Because she was so often alone Heather learned to do tasks around the house on her own too; cleaning, cooking and all that jazz.
With her parents' help and her good grades she was able to make it into Adessi Hall. But even though she had made it into the school nothing really changed in her habits. She would still spend most of her time on her own, finding a quiet place in the school to read or study; Heather never even joined any club. She feels like she should try socializing soon, but she's still scared.
