Note: Um, Angst. This was a scene I promised myself I'd never write, but did. I guess it's 'cause I've had a bad week, and I'm in a bad mood.
34, Sunrise; Sunset
She held her son once. Just once.
It was a bright, hurt-your-eyes morning when she went into labor, and a dusty, rosy sunset when the midwife put him in her arms.
A quick glimpse of blue eyes, a shock of dark hair. She thought that he’d be handsome someday - and not the goofy, loveable handsome of Laguna, rather the dark, mysterious handsome of the father she’d known only through pictures. He took after his grandfather so much already.
But something was wrong, as something always had to be when things go right. And they whisked him away and fluttered around her like typical doctors, and it wasn’t until she saw sheets covered with blood that she realized.
Nothing was wrong with her boy - but she was dying. Dying. Tears stung her eyes and her whole abdomen shocked with pain, and all she could see was his face.
He’d be handsome someday. Gorgeous, really.
She told the nearest person - whose face was never clear because it looked like Laguna and her father and her son all rolled into one - to name him Squall. She fancied that the person nodded, but wasn’t sure.
She held her son once, while a dusty sun set behind her, and by nightfall was gone.
