Happy Anniversary
McRaider
Summary: Rose giggled as she watched her dad and tad smile at one another knowingly as they pulled each other close.
Author’s Note: I spent the later half of my day off on Wednesday writing one shots and towards the end of the day this just seemed perfect.
Rated: G maybe PG
Disclaimer: I don't own anything or anyone but the kidlets, the song belongs to someone else (I forget the orginal artist) and was sung by John Barrowman.

They each had their assignments; Aeryn-now thirteen-was in charge of getting music that they might like. To do that she had to call Aunt Tosh in London for help, it wasn’t hard to get her on the phone-and soon they spent hours just talking about how life in Cardiff was treating everyone. Aeryn had gotten five song titles from Aunt Tosh that they’d probably enjoy dancing to. She then went to the hub the next day, and with help from Aunt Martha, she spent the rest of the afternoon burning a CD for the special night.
Johnny was in charge of making sure nothing happened. It sounded simple enough, but in a job like Torchwood it was almost impossible to get a night off. So he’d gone to great lengths of even asking Uncle Tommy-their part time employee at Torchwood-to come in for the night and with Martha’s help to watch the Hub. Tosh was even on call from London and would do whatever was needed to make sure their night remained undisturbed.
Gareth was supposed to make sure they never figured it out. This ended up being fairly easy, neither man had enough time to discuss what was going on in their own lives, let alone their four children. Not that the four children minded, it made their work all the easier. Gareth was also in charge of setting up for the night as soon as he got home. Immediately he and John made sure their parents stayed away until seven that night. They set up the candles, the CD player, everything that would make the night special for their fathers.
Rose-the head of Operation “20th Anniversary”-picked up her three siblings, prepared dinner, made sure their two year old sister Kyle was good to stay at Jake and Mickey’s for the night. She helped Aeryn set up the music to come on automatically right before dinner would commence. She’d made their favorite foods; they’d even bought a cake from the baker down the street for their dads. If everything worked the way it was supposed to, the night would go off without a hitch, and their fathers would be allowed to have a quiet evening alone with one another. Rose had arranged the letter to Jack and Ianto which told them the four siblings would spend the night at Rose’s flat-which was sort of true. The four had agreed that after at least one dance, they’d slip out to their sister’s flat, giving the two men the rest of the night alone.
Jack and Ianto stepped into their house, stunned when Gareth greeted them at the door. “I’ll take your coats gentlemen, your table a waits,” his baritone voice said, his smile was evident as he accepted their coats. Both fathers looked at their son as if he was crazy, but slipped off their jackets just the same. They were about to step into the living room, when John appeared, dressed his favorite pair of dress pants and dress shirt. That’s when Jack and Ianto realized their children were up to something.
            “Right this way, gentlemen.”
Jack let out a low whistle as Ianto stood there in awe at what their children had done. The room was lit only by candles, a single red rose sat in a vase in the middle of a table. The table was perfectly set, with dinner set at both places. Rose, standing in front of the table offered a warm smile as she pulled out a seat for both men.
“Please, have a seat and enjoy your dinner.”
“What have you kids done,” chuckled Jack as he and Ianto sat beside one another. Before any of the kids bothered an answer, romantic music filled the room.
Oh thinking about all our younger years,
There was only you and me
We were young and wild and free
Now nothing can take you away from me
We’ve been down that road before,
But that’s over now
You keep me coming back for more
Jack looked over at Ianto and felt his eyes begin to burn with unshed tears-twenty years ago he’d sung this song to Ianto on Christmas Eve, as his way to tell Ianto that he was in this forever. Ianto caught his husband’s smile and returned it. Neither man noticed their children had slipped out of the room, because the rest of the world disappeared as they stood up from their food, forgotten.
Jack pulled his husband close, smiling as he felt the warm body of the man he’d vowed to spend forever with. He could feel Ianto’s breath against his neck, the shock that his hand created on his back.
Baby you’re all that I want
When you’re lying here in my arms
I’m finding it hard to believe we’re in heaven
And love is all that I need
And I found it there in your arms
It isn’t too hard to see, we’re in heaven
At some point, Jack had begun to sing while they swayed to the soft music. Their children left for an evening of family bonding. The card on the table untouched, the candles burning lightly, the food getting cold all that mattered was this right here, right now.
Ianto smiled as he pulled Jack just a little closer, settling his head against his lover’s neck, smelling the pheromones, feeling the heat. “Happy Anniversary.” He murmured. Twenty years-twenty wonderful years filled with good and bad memories. Built on a foundation of two men just trying to make the other man happy.
Oh once in your life you find someone
Who will turn your world around
Bring you up when you’re feeling down
Yeah nothing could change what you mean to me
Oh there’s lots that I could say
But just hold me now
Cause our love will light the way
Jack couldn’t quite believe how fast twenty years had gone. The memories flashed so quickly, the birth of little Rosie-who was now a student at the Uni studying theatre and acting. Her first bath, her first steps, her first words. He smiled as the memories continued to take him over, her first day of school when he and Ianto had sat in front of the school all day waiting for her to come running back to her daddies. Her first sport, he first stage performance. Her first period, and of course her first true act of defiance. Her first boyfriend, first date, first car. The day she’d announced where she wanted to go to college, what she wanted to study.
Then there was Gareth, his own man-a point the twins had made a long time ago. All of Gareth’s firsts, and even a few other things, his hugs that made Jack feel warm inside, the way when Gareth laughed he sounded like Ianto, the way he looked just like Ianto now, but had looked just like Jack as a baby. The way he’d never cried as a baby but gave everyone a fit as a child. The way his tongue slipped between his teeth-just like his Aunt Rose-when he concentrated or read. His first girlfriend, who he was positive he was going to marry.
Baby you’re all that want
When you’re lying here in my arms
I’m finding it hard to believe we’re in heaven
And love is all that I need
And I found it there in your heart
It isn’t too hard to see, we’re in heaven
Jack smiled as his shifted to his beautiful John. Sweet John who’d screamed until he was nearly two. He’d been so fully of energy and love. He smiled as he first recalled when John opened his mouth at the ripe age of five to sing for everyone at his grandma’s birthday and stunned everyone with his obvious skills. All of his performances, the day he’d told his parents he was gay, his first boyfriend who’d lasted all of two weeks. And of course, John’s most recent announcement that he was trying out for Wicked, a Broadway performance being brought back on Broadway.
Then there was silly little Aeryn, only thirteen she was just beginning to rebel, sweet and beautiful. When she giggled, Jack felt like they’d created an angel. Even now she was sure she wanted to be a nurse, wanted to help people like her Aunt Martha, Uncle Tom and Uncle Owen did. She had a beautiful spirit and was far too much like the both of them.
I’ve been waiting for so long
For something to arrive
For love to come alone
Now our dreams are comin’ true
Through the good times and the bad
I’ll be standing there by you
They’d made so many memories together over the past twenty years. “Happy Anniversary, Ianto.” Jack finally replied. He wouldn’t trade these past twenty years for anything. In fact he was almost afraid it would end. He knew they’d both live forever and so would their children most likely, but it was that Jack never wanted this feeling to end. This feeling of complete and utter helplessness when he realized just how deeply he loved the man he held in his arms.
Baby you’re all that I want
When you’re lying here in my arms
I’m finding it hard to believe we’re in heaven
And love is all that I need
And I’ve found it there in your heart
It isn’t too hard to see, we’re in heaven
Ianto knew Jack was feeling the same as him, a small desperation for this feel to continue forever as they continued their romantic dance. All their anniversaries were special; Jack and Ianto struggled to do something for one another every year. But this year was extra special, because their children had added a small touch. A hint of each of themselves in it, to remind their fathers that they’d done so much good in their lives.
Oh thinking about all our younger years
There was only you and me
We were young and wild and free
They would later reheat their dinner and watch a movie on the couch after making love for a few hours. They’d read the card before falling asleep curled in one another’s arms. A card that would read: To the best fathers any kids could ever ask for. We’ve been blessed to be loved unconditionally by you for twenty years-but tonight is for you to show each other that you still love each other unconditionally. Each child had signed it, and they’d put Kyle’s hand print on the front. And while tomorrow would be just another day, it would be another day to create memories with one another and recall just how deeply they adored each other.
