Wrapping up

Apr 09, 2012 01:12

Having now caught up with a couple of posts my Lent blog-a-day is finally over, under 25 hours late. 46 posts (not counting this one), ranging from short reviews of films to a rambling post about stories I want to write, and posts about improvised comedy to descriptions of my life. So now I’m going to look back and see what I did or didn’t like ( Read more... )

thanks, blog_a_day, me

I have been reading and finding everything interesting. The improv posts are fascinating even though I don't have much experience of that. I really like snippety reviews (probably better than long reviews!). I somehow hadn't read 'Clickety Click' when you first posted it, but I just read it now and thought it was brilliant and very funny - would definitely approve of more of that type of thing.

The two posts that really struck a chord with me were 'For Science!' and 'On Writing' - partly I think that's because I spend a lot of time thinking about the direction of my research and career, and a lot of time wishing I had time to think more about writing original fiction (as with you, that's been a very long-term ambition with me); and partly I think it's because you were clearly writing about you and important things that matter to you, and I guess that's what connecting with someone's blog is about.

By the way, a question - how do you feel about comments? I'm one of those bloggers who gets put off a bit by a lack of comments :) And if I thought you felt like that, I would have made more of an effort to comment on things I'd read here.

Thanks for your comment! I wouldn't say I got put off by a lack of comments, but it is very nice to get them as often that's the only sign that I get that anyone is actually reading what I've written.

I'm glad you liked "Clickety Click". I should probably get more practice with trying out different styles like that in order to develop one of my own, and not just have to rely on aping what someone else does better. I'm definitely going to do more snippety reviews too.

"For Science!" was planned as a post where I tried to work out what I want to do. It's very much a snapshot - I'm sure if I wrote it again my position would have changed, but I think I managed to strike a nice balance there. I was quite surprised to hear you spend a lot of time thinking about the direction of your career as from reading your blog it seems to be going along so well that it's not something I expected you to have to worry about.

"On Writing" was an interesting one as I didn't set out to write it, but what came out was my favourite post of the entire blog-a-day. I do wish I drove myself to write more fiction, but at the moment I seem to have my work cut out doing all the stuff that takes up my day, so it might be a while. On the other hand, there are a few short pieces I want to write and a couple of things that I want to say about writing that will all end up on the blog, so there is still some creativity flowing there. Hope you continue to enjoy my posts!
