Overall I loved the Watchmen. I have written a more detailed review in response to a friends post and will post it here later but I musts be off to work.Updated with attached Review beware ye who read on there be spoiler beyond ye pointe.
I think the altereded ending stayed true to one of the larger messages of the book. I think if they were not standing right at the edge of the pit when Silke Specter and Dr. Manhattan returned to the scene, it would have had less impact. I did squirm and flinch whe she just blurted out the one thing near unmeantionable in the book. She never ever says "Father" in reference to the Comedian. It is a part of the characters deep denial. She was able to say "His daughter" once to keep from saying father and once "Ok I know about Dad". It is all kept so unmentionable in the book. The whole " Edward Blake , the Comedian (yeah I hope after two fucking hours we know he is the Comedian) is my father". Felt a bit like a dumbing down of the torturous denial she was going through in the book. I also was unhappy with the scene where Dan meets Mom. Dan and Laurie were able to move on without being superheroes because they had each other. They went so far as to change their looks and go into a state of hiding to protect that. I know he felt that telling her mom she knew was the important part of the scene, but since they rewrote all the wording it felt trite. That is sad since it is the scene where she comes to terms with accepting who she is, instead of being what others wanted her to be.
As to the changes to the Rorscach's kidnappping case, I like the changed ending but I still prefer the book version. Hacksaw or burn to death. Also I liked the visual change to the prison scene, the choice of the electric saw over the welding torch was far mor visually graphic and expedient.
I thought the opening montage was a fantastic way to cram in all the less vital history plot points. And I was also glad they were able to get the permission to use almost all the musical pieces that were referenced to in the book. It was amazing what their costume and makeu department did to age both the Comedian and the Silke Spectre (Sally).
Overall I loved the film, but could tell that the writers and directors struggled a bit with the changes to the ending.
