OLD DOG

Your bones creak

like dry branches in winter

when you try to conquer the ups

and downs of stairs.

And I agree

it’s not fair your

ebony eyes have clouded over

with the gauzy veil of age.

Your ears often miss

the scampers of squirrels as

scent alone steers you

slowly down the street.

But, after all our days together

you know me better than anyone--

dreading my leavings

banking energy

to spend on my returns

with a well practiced

tail-wagging-toe-nail-tapping

dance of joy.

You’re eager to forgive

and forget, asking so little,

while endlessly giving much

with gifts from your bottomless bowl

of affection.

Yes you, my sweet, old dog,

are the true definition of

Friend.
