Eco-Friendly Reality Show: Energy Smackdown

So someone has finally managed to produce an eco-friendly reality show!! Yeah!!

Some things people did were just drastic: a shower in the dark in early summer mornings, for example; and some really common-sense!
I am intrigued about getting an energy-meter that shows how much you are using currently (so you can go about & turn unnecessary lights or equipment off;) & wonder if energy companies or the state here could give rabates for insulation & such too!!

Three families competed: a very eco-conscious one, a terribly 'consumption oriented' one, & an 'average' one that initially saved most energy, %-wise (until the eco-conscious family just bought CFLs for all their friends!! - & thereby won the 'community challenge'!! LOL)

"People asked 'Aren't you relieved the competition's over?' " Sarah says. "But it didn't feel like a huge burden. We're paying 25 percent less for electricity, and I don't mind that my kitchen isn't overflowing with plastic bags now that I take tote bags to the grocery store."

The competition-factor helped families to get inspired, do new things (or stuff they've been putting off before!!) & get the kids to cooperate!!

And, who knew?
"Upright freezers are generally less efficient than chest-type freezers because upright models let more cold air escape every time they're opened."
