One suspects that the effect would also depend on whether one actually ever had one in the first place, as well as the reasons for changing ones mind. Straightforward indifference or an intellectual objection to the tenets of a particular system would have different results from a more personal disillusionment, for instance. The sniffy remark of an ultra-Catholic friend to the effect that "Anglicans are atheists who like nice music" also comes to mind.
