I did not know that the Series of Unfortunate Events film won an Oscar. Or U-571. Or The Nutty Professor. Death Becomes Her. City Slickers. Dick Tracy got 3! Harry adn the Hendersons?! Innerspace?! Once you get back past 1980, a whole b unch of films I haven't heard of

Oh, Dick Tracy? That won Oscars? Geezus. Madonna must have pulled in a lot of favours for that.

Yeah, that's a winner for worst movie to have won an oscar, for sure.

I'm going to assume that look at oscars from the first few decades would lead to some horrifying "of their time" films

That said, Dick Tracy won best makeup, best art direction and best original song (for a Sondheim penned number). Which is sort of fair enough. For all its myriad of flaws, it does look incredible. It's probably the most "comic book" looking film based on a comic that isn't Sin City or Watchmen.

I actually quite like Avatar. I mean it's not the best film ever made, but it's not that bad. And the main reason it was successful was because of it's use of 3D. The plot may be rubbish, but at the time it was released, its use of 3D was the best I had ever seen, and probably still is.
