Was that headline for Scalzi's photo of the moon your view?

If so I'm surprised. A crescent moon is often pictured with the dark portion illuminated by earthshine. I have several myself.

I don't think I've ever seen one that showed the dark portion lit before.

Possibly I just haven't seen many photos of a crescent moon.

The difficulty is in balancing the exposure, as Scalzi said.

The earthshine is most obvious at the new moon - that is why you can see the new moon! As the crescent gets larger, it gets harder and harder to see the dark portion.
