There's still some subtle discrepancies that the eye picks up on, related to the 'uncanny valley' effect. The mouth doesn't *quite* move the jaw correctly.

It's not far off, but I wouldn't worry too much yet about the Dystopian Future Already Being Here.

Yeah, funny feelings how good that's getting. I suspect there's a long way to go before it would fool a good forensic analysis, but it doesn't stop "what you see with your own eyes" being a lot less reliable. And of course, there's no reason news has to always be live -- something that's quick, but can be polished up by hand in less than a couple of hours, might often be as useful.

It'd be even more disconcerting for video-chat, though, if it was someone you know...

In other words, if someone posts video that seems too good to be true, check snopes, like you do when someone posts a photo that seems too good to be true. OK, I can do that.

(Many of the people I know on Facebook seem incapable of doing that, but that's another story.)

"If you could be anyone in the world, living or dead, on video, who would you be?"
"George Bush"?

"Lets make a video of someone really famous saying stupid things and making stupid faces even if they didn't in reality."
"Oh, let's use George Bush!"

You can never trust the news again. In other news, real-time CGI editing of video...
