When I am God-Emperor #7993 - Technology that won't go dark

Feb 05, 2016 22:47

I understand that being able to find the power button for a monitor in the dark might be something that some people need to do occasionally. And that flashing lights on a network device let you know that it's talking to other network devices, and not taking a long nap ( Read more... )

Why do you need any of those on or on standby when you're sleeping?

Well, until about fifteen minutes ago the Powerline adapter was needed so that people could connect to my server, which they can do at any time of the day or night.

Now that that's in the living room instead, that can be unplugged.

But making the monitors go dark means actively unplugging them from the power sockets, which means crawling under desks.

You need to get extension cables that have switches on them. We have those precisely so we can switch things off without having to do that. These days I can reach the switch for my gaming PC, but one time I had an extension cable with switches, and then another one without switches plugged into it. The second one had the PC, monitor, and speakers on it, and the switch on the first one meant I could turn those all off in one go.

Sounds useful. At least, for everything other than the PC, which tends to be on standby, as it wakes up much faster from that than from actually being powered off.

everything has gotten so much brighter too. My alarm clock works fine with duct tape over the numbers, otherwise you could read by the light of it. And I have pennies and tin foil taped over lots of lights.

I don't actually keep any tech in my bedroom. But we do have a street light outside.

I also have a streetlight outside. I need to fit blackout curtains...

I sleep in a loft bed so I look out through the top of the window onto the street. The only time I haven't seen bright lights outside-as well as the Empire State Building, a nice touch-was in the blackout a few years ago.
