The westboro church cant be real. They gotta be a group of trolls. They fuck with EVERYBODY. Even people who (at least on paper) are on their side.

I know - it's fantastic. I've seen lots of conspiracy theories about them.

Yes, I'm pretty sure at this point that they don't really believe much of it. Certainly they have earned money from beating lawsuits brought against them.

I think, some of both. Or rather, a small family under the thrall of one screwed up leader who is both. They clearly demonstrate in ways they think will be most controversial, not according to which things they think are most sinful. But I doubt he set out to do this per se, I think he's really screwed up and genuinely feels America is falling into sin and everyone is against him, even if he's a bit vague about what else he believes.

Fred Phelps actually died last year. He was actually excommunicated from the church before he died, for being too moderate.

I recall reading that pretty much all of them have legal training of some kind or another. So yeah, they do deliberately outrageous things so they can then sue people for their reactions.
