I think that's the only way Cameron can save himself now, go full-on attack against Ashcroft and say he was trying to blackmail his way into cabinet, didn't get his way, and has now done this.

But that would require that Ashcroft doesn't have something even worse on Cameron. And I am quite certain for Ashcroft to have done this, he must have something even worse sitting in reserve.
