The falls -- can't they send something that can emit a radio signal down it?

Where it looks like there is tech that can do this - you need specialist radio equipment that works through solid rock and/or layers of water (both of which block radio signals really well), but it's theoretically doable with the right kit.

I can't help wondering if the authorities haven't already done this, but not published the results because the mystery makes for a more lucrative tourist attraction...

My main takeaway from the hacker news discussion is that the water is likely flowing through gravel, cracks and/or aquifers that a tracking device won't fit though.
