Andrew, I want to respond at greater length to the Economist article on Ben Carson, but (speaking as a US Republican) let me give you my initial reactions:

(1) While ostensibly on the subject of "black Republicans" (Andrew, I realize your title is a paraphrase, but it accurately reflects the purported theme of the article), the article invokes only the name and views of a single black Republican. Nowhere is there any mention of Allen West, Mia Love, or Condi Rice - who may not be current Presidential contenders but are certainly black Republicans.

Now I admire Dr. Ben Carson greatly and may well support him for the Republican nomination, he's not the only black Republican nor the only one speaking on African-American / GOP relations. Here is Thomas Sowell:

(2) Since the Economist writer is so interested in the Charleston shooting, I'm sure he has not missed Allen West's comments on it:

(3) As for minorities in the GOP: I'm not black, but as a Jewish Republican I am well aware that Jews are better represented on the Democratic side. (Although the Democrats are steadily losing that advantage, and by all appearances seem determined to keep losing it.) There are many reasons for this, but I do not count Republican anti-Semitism as chief among them.

No sane person would deny that racism continues to be a factor in American life. But one need not deny the existence of racism to question the Economist's unsupported assumption that 'the intransigent obliviousness of white Republicans ... stands hugely in the way of further progress toward racial equality'.

It is all very well for a liberal-leaning, British magazine to offer its opinions on the Republican Party. But I think Republican voters mainly care about fiscal responsibility and a free market, Constitutionally limited government, a strong national defense, a coherent foreign policy, and a credible policy on illegal immigration.
