Well, the current Ultimates Spider-man, Miles Morales, is African American/Latino and is about 14 years old. He has fans crawling out of the woodwork, as it were. That book is, I believe, the most well-reviewed and best selling of the current Ultimates line. There is a small amount of talk of Miles making the jump to TV.

Meanwhile, over in the main line (616) Peter Parker's body has been usurped by Otto Octavius (therefore leading to the current Spider-man being referred to by fans as Sp0ck) and he's been around for nearly a year now.

So - could Spider-man be black? Yes, well, he is.

Could he be a very dark 'hero' entirely different from the original Lee/Ditko character? Yes, well, he is.

Thank you for saying all that so I don't have to.

I actually thought the essay was going to be about the Ultimate Spider-Man.

When I got far enough to realise it wasn't, I was hopping up and down yelling "What is wrong with you? It's a meaningless question because Spider-Man is black! Why are you writing all this guff?!"

Honestly, some people.

And, unlike the Doc Ock thing, it is pretty much certain that Bendis's revamp of Ultimate Spider-man will stick. There's no yelling of "Bring Back Peter!" as there is with 616.

Yeah, Rilstone has a really specific and abstruse and convoluted style. That there have been black Spidermans (Spidermen?) will no doubt be something he expects to form part of the point he's making.

Well, it's too damn abstruse for me. I did not see that anywhere in the article which I actually did read, even though it annoyed me.

"In the Ultimate universe, Peter Parker is currently spending a year dead for tax reasons and the "job" of Spider-Man is being performed by an Hispanic youth. It works fine."
