How to contact or talk to me

Jun 29, 2013 11:41

As this comes up intermittently, and I have preferences, I thought I should make them clear*. So here they are, from favourite to least-favourite.

1) Email. If you want to get me a message that doesn't need to be broadcast then this is the best method. I've been using andrew@ducker.org.uk for a terribly long time (in internet years), and it's so widely spread that I just don't worry about spam any more**
2) LJ/DW. Comment there and I'll get an email, and can respond. This is my favourite method of open discussion, because you can write long comments, and I can reply similarly (and other people can get involved too).
3) Facebook. If you have me on Facebook then pinging me a message will get my attention - but during the day I'll be responding on my phone. Which I find frustrating, but ok for short messages.
4) Twitter. Speaking of frustrating short messages, there's Twitter. Which I don't tend to read, and find frustrating for conversation. A simple back and forth that doesn't require anything complex is ok - but the second that messages get longer than a single tweet I find it pretty-much impossible to keep track. If there's a link you disagree with, and your disagreement is any longer than "You are wrong, and this link explains why..." then I'd really appreciate it if you came over to the discussion on the post and left something longer.

A brief note on phones: I think they're awesome. Discussions that can take multiple messages back andforth to solve can be sorted out in a thirty-second phone call. But it's bugger-all use during the day, because I'm at work, and chances are that unless you know me well you don't have my number. It is, however, on my Facebook profile, and also linked to from my LJ/DW profile.

*Clearly, this only applies if you aren't, say, Julie. Who, one hopes, knows how to talk to me.
**Besides which, gmail, which is the backing store for that domain, handles spam very well. I get about two pieces per month.
