Okay, so I understand that poly/non-mono/BDSM/kinky people don't necessarily feel like they belong in the maintstream. But why does that mean they should automatically be included in my stream? I don't really understand why that follows one thing on from the other... explanations anyone?
I assume that people feel that there's a general battle of "accepting" versus "alienating", and that the people who are currently alienated are thus on the same side as part of the general fight. So marriage equality rights, for instance, is one battle, but the general war is against patriarchy.
Yeah, that's really not how I view my community. Which is to say that I do think that I'm part of a wider fight for equality, but I don't think that the particular needs of my minority group are necessarily compatible with those of the poly community or the BDSM/kink scene.
Seems reasonable. There's no reason why they would be, except in the "Keep your laws off my body." sense.
So, from a purely liberal sense, I'm in favour of anti-discrimination laws in general, and as much equality as we can squeeze out of the system. But different parts of that need to be approached in different ways, and differing needs will not gel at the same time.
Not that that's anything new. Socialist feminists and Feminist socialists have frequently not got on, for instance :->
