Reading out loud: Game of Thrones
This evening I went round to a friend's flat*, who has downloaded the subtitle files for the first few Game of Thrones episodes, converted them laboriously into scripts, and printed off a few copies.
We then assigned characters, and I was ended up with Jon, Cersei, Viserys, Theon, and the assassin (as well as picking up Sansa when we hit the final scenes and realised that she hadn't been assigned to anyone). We then put the second episode on the TV (fast forwarding through the credits whiling singing along**) and then hit mute for the majority of the episode, and performed each scene in turn when we hit it.
We did this a few weeks before Christmas for episode one, and I found myself slightly awkward - a little too nervous to really get into it. This time around I felt a lot more relaxed, and was definitely both better, and having a lot more fun. I was reading slightly ahead of where we were to make sure that I knew what was coming up, and trying out different intonations in my head to make sure I got the emotional tone right. It was both challenging, but in a good way - the atmosphere being of people who were there to have fun, and be silly in parts, but also who wanted to try and make it work, which was great. I'd definitely be up for more of this kind of thing.
