Why do people have to lie about what/who they are on the internet, until the reach the stage that they've created a whole new persona for themselves, which has very little in common with the person in reality?
There is someone I know online who, I'm 99.9% certain, has been telling a lot of lies about who they are, their life experience and the whole works. The stories this person tells are so incredibly contradictory and far-fetched/extreme that they must surely be falsified. Now making up one or two little white lies is grand, because they can be used for comic effect and as a bit of a laugh, because the people you're with can tell it's an exaggeration. However, when, as this person does/has, you seemingly create a fantastic web of tales that contradict and go against one another... then, I believe that there has to been some deep routed issue.
For all I know, the person could be telling the truth. However, I have no way to prove/disprove because no-body has ever met the person, so there's no way to tell what is what. However, if these stories do turn out to indeed be true, than this person, in a short time, has lived the most fantastically full life. I am not going to cite examples because it would immediately identify the person, and this is something I hope to avoid doing.
So why is the person doing it, if they indeed are. The only reason I can pin to it is because they are over-compensating for their real-life deficiencies. The people who do this must have confidence issues in reality and are afraid to face up to their problems - and maybe even admit to them - so instead the dream up wonderfully interesting lives and characters to act out on the internet. Now this may be grand in as much as they, for a while, are free from their own problems in reality... but in the long run, does it not do more harm than good? Is it not better to face the problems and admit them, than to cover over them?
Just something to think about.
