As most of you probably know I went to see British Sea Power last night...
Nottingham's Rescue Rooms are the smallest of the three venues in the Rock City complex, not that that bothered anyone though - this was one gig I'm not going to forget in a hurry.
Support for the gig came in the form of The Killers - I didn't actually know I knew them, but I recognized their single - and they were great. Lots of fun, a cross between Pulp and Hot Hot Heat. The only disappointing was that they were only on stage for 45 minutes. They left the stage so that the main act could set up... BSP cover the stage in branches and leaves, there were at least four stuffed birds hidden on stage - and drummer was basically drumming in bush. They came on stage dressed in authentic sailor costumes, and launched into an amazing set full of energy and passion the like of which I've never seen.
They played almost all of their debut album, The Decline of British Sea Power, and the songs varied from monster noise songs that defended you, to soft ballards. There was almost no time to catch your breath because they filled the short gaps between songs with the sound of WWII planes flying over head, and various other noises.
After an hour they all dropped their instruments and disappeared off-stage. Naturally the reappeared soon enough for a half hour long encore, that mostly consisted of an epic final song that lasted well over 10 minutes, and finished with the one guitarist piggy-backing on top of the other before being thrown into the crowd for a spot of crowd surfing, to be quickly followed by the lead singer. When the keyboardist isn't needed he puts his tin hat on, grabs a drum and wanders around the stage giving it a good banging - this last song saw him wander through the crowd obviously having a wail of a time.
If you get the chance to see British Sea Power, you'd be crazy to miss out!
