The Lord Of The Rings Musical

Last night Ellen and myself went into London to see the musical based on the Lord Of The Rings trilogy. There is no word to describe it other than breathtaking. The technical prowess shown is simply stunning. The stage was a key part of the show. It spun round and bits went up and down to create cliffs, bridges, ravines, platforms and towers. The lighting was also amazing and greatly added to the performance.

The actors were some what dwarfed by the technical aspects of the show, however Galadriel's singing was superb and Golum was excellent. His entrance (climbing upside down from the roof to the stage) drew gasps from the audience.

As you might expect it is very much the abridged version of the story. Helms Deep is not present, and many other scenes are skipped over. The essence of the story is very much intact however and you are not left wanting more. The battle sequences are perhaps the only disappointing aspect as they are reduced to mere symbolic dances. The Orcs and Ring Wraiths are scary and appear in great numbers so it's not all namby-pamby dancing.

If you don't like Lord Of The Rings then this is never going to make you like it. For true aficionados (who are willing to accept that not everything can be included) or just fans of the film it is a must see.
