Last night I went go karting for the first time ever at
F1 Racing out at Monks Cross. The evening didn't start well as I got the times mixed up and missed getting a taxi with the rest of the group by 15 minutes. A quick but expensive taxi ride later I was at the venue and quickly got suited up. The session was divided up into a 10 lap qualifying round followed by a 15 lap race. As it was my first time ever I tip-toed around the circuit and only managed to come 10th out of 14. I was actually only 2.6 seconds (off a 21 second lap) behind the leader so I was quite pleased. My fastest lap came on my final lap so I had clearly been getting faster.
The marshalls said we had two options, either run two races of 7 or two races of 5 and one of 4. The two races of seven would have been much better for me but I was out voted so I took the grid in pole position for the first of the three races. I lead the race from start to finish, lapped two of the three other karts and finished the race about to lap the other kart. My fastest lap time improved quite a bit and in the end I was only about a second off the fastest lap of anyone else there.
It was a great night out, although I was aching quite a bit afterwards! My body clearly isn't used to being flung round a track a silly speeds. Next time I go I should do quite a bit better as I'm sure my qualifying round would be a lot better.
