This was my first of what will hopefully be many gigs in 2006. Although I didn't know much about the bands that were on the bill I was looking forward to an evening of fun pop music.
First on stage were 'The Artist And The Title', a weird jazz/funk instrumental band. They were clearly all very talented musicians, with some great keyboard and saxophone playing on show. Their songs didn't have much direction though, and with no lyrics at all I did find my self getting a bit bored. At one point the even had to shout that they hadn't finished yet when the audience started clapping during a quiet section.
'Mono Taxi' were the main support act, and were fun and bouncy in a jingly-jangly sort of way. Despite the discussion on what the name meant the general consensus was 'meh' - and I can't really say much more than that.
The headline act, 'The Research', came on just after 9pm and were also of the fun and bouncy, jingly-jangly pop variety but the infectious enthusiasm of the band for what they were doing soon spread to the audience, much like The Magic Numbers, and everyone was bopping along. The Research are an extremely minimalistic band featuring the worlds smallest drum kit, a bass guitar and a keyboard that sounds like it was brought for £5 at a car boot sale. Despite, or perhaps because of this, they sounded great and were a really unique band. I find it hard to imagine how they would fill a bigger venue than Fibbers, but I'd love to be proved wrong.
