Google Talk

So the rumours were true, there is now a Google IM client. Not only are they using the open Jabber protocol but they also actively encourage people to access with clients other than the official one!

Everyone with a gmail (which is most people) is automatically signed up, I'm andrewjwilkinson AT gmail.com.

It's a shame it's a closed system though. No s2s makes Darren sad :(

They mention it on their help page, but if an organisation like google started to connect to the MSN network without permission from Microsoft they'd get sued so fast it would make your head spin.

They do say they want to 'federated' with people like Microsoft, but I don't hold out much hope.

You misunderstand. I cannot add darren (at) gmail.com to my roster, or vice-versa.

Ah, I see. That is annoying. There is no reason why you shouldn't able to do that as it's part of Jabber... That makes me sad too :-(

I'm all game if it gives me a good excuse to drop MSN messenger. I guess it's success will depend on groups of people switching over to it.
