As the Election draws near everyone seems to have something to say. This note is a homily from my deacon regarding the upcoming election, though more specifically, the requirement of Catholics to defend the sanctity of human life that is desecrated by the holocaust of the new millennium

Side Note:
When is it ok to murder someone else? Examples include self defense, times of war (God willing, the war is a just war although that isn't usually the case), or... if a robber breaks into the house threatening the lives of your kids/spouse and the "Only" option is kill (that is they can't be constrained, knocked out etc) then it is permissible.

So for Rape.
Scenario 1
Girl is raped, impregnated, and if she chooses to have the baby her life isn't in danger.

If the baby is a human, particularly a human person, then the inconvenience and pain of childbirth is not a good enough reason to kill a pure innocent child.

Scenario 2
Girl is raped, impregnated, and if she chooses to have the baby she'll die
Now the situation is a little more tricky. But it boils down to just one question. Is the mothers life greater than the baby's. Is the mother more of a person? Is it age before beauty? Who should place a price tag on human life and determine who is worth keeping alive and who is not?

Ok this isn't as well a thought out argument as I would like to put forth but it is what I have for now. It isn't a complete argument. That requires more caffeine that I have in my system at the moment.

I guess it comes down to this. As a non-Catholic, I feel extremely threatened by the capitalization of this sermon and the my-way-or-the-highway attitude. I can understand the idea of this doctrine, but as I disagree, reading this:

Do not let anyone confuse you!...Abortion is THE ISSUE and WE MUST VOTE for that candidate that will BEST PROTECT THE RIGHTS of the UNBORN, even if that candidate that is NOT a perfect candidate with the other issues that concern Catholics."

makes me nauseous. I can't support something I don't believe in, so I don't support the so-called "pro-life" attitude. I would be unable to stand up to great evil because I don't believe that embryos have souls? Is this priest just looking to pick a fight?

That's fine. The homily is designed for Catholics!!! So I wouldn't imagine any non-Catholics or non-practicing Catholics to get a whole lot out of it. I wouldn't imagine you'd support something you don't believe in. That would be silly indeed.

In regards to souls, when do you think the ensoulment (soul entering the body) takes place?
