#150: Rec List - Alpha/Beta/Omega AU

Oct 03, 2015 00:53

Prompt number one from my self-made rec-meme - I like this AU.. And here comes the rec list for alpha/beta/omega AU. If you don't know what omega verse is, check this handy explenation on fanlore wiki. Or ask me. Apparently I've became the person who explains it randomly to whomever asks. Sometimes at parties. Among normal people. It's fun. 10/10 would recomend. (I actually considered writing a meta comparing the use of a/b/o trope in Johnlocks and Mystrades. Let me know if you'd like to read this shit.) Anyway, onto the rec! (Probably the very first part of the recs in this theme, since I frickin love it. I'm just too lazy to sort through the full mess of my saved up links.)

01. I like this AU. - Alpha/Beta/Omega Rec Post

Kingsman

Title: The Gentleman's Guide to Heat
Author: azrielen
Pairing(s): Harry Hart/Eggsy Unwin
Rating: Explicit/NC17
Word Count: 3.088
Warnings: Attempted Rape/Non-con (not between main pairing),
Notes/Tags/Additional Info: 5 Times Fic, Mating Cycles/In Heat, Merlin saves the day, Eggsy spends a lot of time getting tranquilized, Eggsy is a Little Shit, alpha!Harry, Omega!Eggsy, Beta!Merlin, Alpha!Roxy, non-explicit attempted gang rape, Happy Ending, Knotting

Summary: Eggsy isn’t surprised by the fact that the Kingsman appear to be nearly all alphas.
Eggsy is an omega, then he’s a Kingsman, and no two heats are alike.

Why I loved it: It's both hot and somewhat slowly building up, deals with lots of issues in very few words. It's one of those fics in which I'm surprised it's so short, because it feels much longer. Not in a "omg, it's dragging on" bad way, but "omg, how did they manage to tell so much so quickly" way. Really good, short fic.

Excerpt: A night passes before Merlin’s team tracks down their weak distress signal, and Eggsy sweats in his corner, blinking blindly into the dim lights and soaking through his pants, breathing in the sharp, hot answering scent of Harry just inches away from him. Harry watches, and breathes in deep lungfuls of the thick air between them, and never once touches him.

He learns to trust Harry again.

Title: zugzwang
Author: potted_music
Pairing(s): Harry Hart/Merlin, also: Arthur/Merlin
Rating: Explicit/NC17
Word Count: 32.967
Warnings: angst, forced/manipulated mating, dub-con/non-con
Notes/Tags/Additional Info: ploty af, trust issues af, Merlin gets manipulated into mating with Arthur in a way, Harry is both paranoid and not paranoid enough, Alpha!Harry, Omega!Merlin, pre-canon.

Summary: When Harry got recruited, he expected his career in Kingsman to be not altogether dissimilar from a Bond movie. It is, kind of, except that instead of a colourful villain, he has to deal with an omega resistance movement, instead of a Bond girl, he gets a surly Scot who would shoot him for the designation, and, most important, he no longer has any idea whom he can trust. He should have become a tailor instead.

Why I loved it: I have a soft spot for omega!Merlin, but also I like tropes being used in a different way than it was planned at first. Which is why I'm a great fan of omega verse being full of plot and talks about society and how that works. I admit this fic is a bit to plotty and gritty for me. Like, I liked it, but I'd like it more if it was a bit happier. But that's just my thing. It's definately an interesting take on Merlin and omega verse in general.

Excerpt: As the meeting ends and the agents disperse, Harry stays behind, waiting for Merlin. When the last stragglers finally leave, Harry sits down as far from Merlin as the table would allow, and asks, “How are you?”

Merlin takes off his glasses and rubs at his eyes before answering. “Fan-fucking-tastic. Don’t you love those days when your brain jumps effortlessly from creative new ways of murdering people to a startling and heart-felt realization that Arthur seems quite fertile?”

Sherlock BBC

Title: Numb
Author: FatlockFills
Pairing(s): Mycroft Holmes/Greg Lestrade
Rating: Explicit/NC17 (Author did not rate the fic, I decided to go with Explicit, though I guess seriously Mature wold also work.)
Word Count: 2.243
Warnings: depression, mpreg, underage
Notes/Tags/Additional Info: pregnancy, weight gain, fatlock, teenage pregnancy
Summary: Mycroft never expected to be a statistic on teenage pregnancy, but now he's waiting out the clock and waiting for a baby he doesn't feel connected to to be born. The ice over his heart can only start to break when their gardener's son makes a bold move.

Why I loved it: I have a weirdly powerful soft spot for teenage Mycroft doing something dumb/reckless/without thinking of consequances. Generally getting himself over his head. Also, yay for cute gardener's son. XD

Excerpt: "Congratulations. On your mate and baby." Gregory’s eyes flicked obviously to the mount of belly that Mycroft still held in one hand. And while he’d normally have let that pass, Mycroft found himself shaking his head.

"Just the baby, actually." His words were light, but there was bitterness in his voice he couldn’t mask.

Title: Consort
Author: songlin
Pairing(s): Mycroft Holmes/Greg Lestrade
Rating: Explicit/NC17
Word Count: 3.969
Warnings: -
Notes/Tags/Additional Info: Omega!Mycroft, Alpha!Lestrade
Summary: sGreg slides his mouth to Mycroft's wrist. "You smell good," he murmurs. "Jesus, you smell so fucking good."

Mycroft's lips part and his legs spread the tiniest bit wider. He'll never admit it, but Greg knows the truth: the filthier Greg's mouth gets, the more Mycroft wants.

Why I loved it: I didn't. I liked it a lot, but love is a bit too much. It's very classy omega verse. Almost completely PWP, barely in character due to the heat, etc. Even has the typical surprising bonus at the end. But hey, omega Mycroft! Steamy mystrade! Good stuff!

Excerpt: "He's asking for you," she drones. "At your earliest convenience."

Mycroft-speak for "now." Greg frowns. "Well, I've got a meeting in an hour, then I can-"

"No."

Greg sighs. "Is it that urgent?"

"Yes…" There's an edge to her answer, a hint that Greg is just a hair's breadth away from-

"Oh! Oh. It's-that. Yeah. I'm-leaving now," Greg says in a rush. He tucks his phone between his ear and shoulder and pulls his coat on. "Tell him...tell him I'm leaving now. Uh-yeah. Bye."

Title: Alphas Protect
Author: Dayja
Pairing(s): Sherlock/John, background Mycroft/Lestrade
Rating:
Word Count: 24.521
Warnings:
Notes/Tags/Additional Info: Alpha!John, Omega!Sherlock,
Summary: Everyone in the world starts their lives as betas. It takes meeting one's soulmate to spark the change into alpha or omega. Sherlock is a beta. He expects to live his entire life that way. After all, he doesn't have a soulmate, right? But if he did have a soulmate, he knew he'd turn out to be the alpha. And Sherlock is never wrong. Right?

Why I loved it: It's an interesting take on the alpha/omega dynamics, the whole finding your soulmate thing. It's like two AUs I love in one. I also dig omega!Lestrade. (Yes, fine, I have a soft spot for Lestrade in every variation of this AU, including beta, you caught me.) And Omega!Sherlock is love, especially, when he is sure he's an alpha.

Excerpt: “You think he’s going to be an alpha?”

“You don’t?”

Even from all the way down the street, the two in question heard Lestrade laughing. Not even knowing what that was about, it still set them off giggling again.

Title: Rarest of the Rare
Author: melody_in_time
Pairing(s): Mycroft/Lestrade, second plan pairing: John/Sherlock
Rating: Explicit/NC17
Word Count: 27.813 (this part)
Warnings: dub-con-ish
Notes/Tags/Additional Info: THIS IS COMPLETE FIC, BUT IS PART OF WIP SERIES. Alpha!Lestrade, Omega!Mycroft, Alpha!John, Omega!Sherlock, D/s.
Summary: Everyone has secrets, Gregory Lestrade just happens to have more than most. The realisation that maybe, just maybe, he had somewhere over the years developed something of a fascination with his very Dominant, very Alpha, friend was, at the end of the day just one more. After all, it's not like anything would come of it. There was no way that Mycroft Holmes would ever be interested in him.

Why I loved it: This is a fic I mostly rec, when someone asks me about a different take on a/b/o. It's interesting, because it mixes two AUs, the a/b/o one and the one in which everyone is either a Dom or a Sub. Here all alphas are Doms, all omegas are Subs. Except, obviously, for main pairing, which makes it so much more fun. Or plotty. Or problematic. Or all of those. Lots of world building, society descriptions and tons and tons of angst.

Excerpt: Without a second thought Greg let go of the door and crashed to his knees as Mycroft unleashed his dominance over him. Expecting to have to out Dom an Alpha Dominant Mycroft had unleashed the full force of his dominance in that command. Greg moaned as he felt it wash over his skin like thousands of sparks and only belatedly realised he’d closed his eyes.

Title: Service Call
Author: deklava
Pairing(s): Mycroft/Lestrade
Rating: Explicit
Word Count: 5.476
Warnings: -
Notes/Tags/Additional Info: even more au than others, PWP, Alpha!Lestrade, Omega!Mycroft.
Summary: Greg Lestrade is an in-house alpha at a posh London hotel. One day he's called to relieve an important omega guest.

Why I loved it: *shrugs* Nice, good PWP is nice and good.

Excerpt: “Apparently he’s a government official taking part in that conference on the tenth floor. His assistant says that he was too involved in the discussions to notice that his heat was coming on until it was too late. He’s locked himself in his suite and a beta security detail’s been assigned to protect him from alpha guests until you get there.”

Title: The Gilded Cage
Author: BeautifulFiction
Pairing(s): John/Sherlock, Sherlock/OMC
Rating: Explicit/NC17
Word Count: 326.854
Warnings: dub-con
Notes/Tags/Additional Info: If the word count is not hint enough - THIS IS PLOTTY AF. Check out all the warnings/tags though. Still, it's brilliant, plotty, the world building is fascinating. And it's deliciously long.
Summary: In a world where Omegas are the property of the elite Alphas, locked away and treasured by those wealthy enough to buy them, John never questioned his flatmate's secondary gender. Sherlock Holmes was an Alpha through-and through.

Wasn't he?

A chance discovery turns the world on its head, and John is left grappling to come to terms with Sherlock's past as events conspire to threaten their future.

Why I loved it: Long fics are the best. Especially when they're plotty.

Excerpt: 'And you - you -' John swallowed, because it wasn't so much whatever was going on in Sherlock's pants that was jamming his thoughts as much as the fact he'd been bitten. 'You have a mate.'

Repulsion narrowed pale eyes and wrinkled Sherlock's nose as he twisted his head to the side. 'No. The word “mate” suggests some level of cooperation and mutual respect, but yes. I have an Alpha. Or perhaps it's more accurate to say that he has me.'

Title: General Rules (and How You Broke Them)
Author: taylorpotato
Pairing(s): Lestrade/Sherlock
Rating: Explicit
Word Count: 4.452
Warnings: -
Notes/Tags/Additional Info: Awesome!Lestrade, Omega!Sherlock, Alpha!Lestrade, fluff and happiness, Lestrade is above your useless cliches.
Summary: Out of all the Alphas in the world, Sherlock has only met one that he finds tolerable-Detective Inspector Lestrade. Actually, tolerable might not be a strong enough word. It's possible that Sherlock likes Lestrade a lot more than he should, but that's not something he would admit out loud. At least, not until he's in heat.

Why I loved it: You know how omega verse was basically created to have two characters shag without a thought? Lestrade is not going to simply give in to those alpha stereotypes. I absolutely adore how he is such a decent human being and doesn't give a fuck about the biology that should make him go barmy. He stays sane and coherent, actually uses his brain. I love Lestrade in this fic and Sherlock is great and in character as well.

Excerpt: He can feel the tension building slowly, the tight ball of heat at the core of him. When Greg pulls back Sherlock doesn’t know whether to be frustrated or relieved.

“You sure about this?” Greg breathes. “I could still stop. You might have to kick me, but I could stop.”

Title: Stars in a Phrygian Sky (part of a series)
Author:
Pairing(s): Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, Irene Adler/Sherlock Holmes, Irene Adler/Molly Hooper, Irene Adler/Sally Donovan, Irene Adler/Jim Moriarty, Sherlock Holmes/Victor Trevor, Sherlock Holmes/Jim Moriarty.
Rating: Explicit/NC17
Word Count: 60.286
Warnings: dub-con-ish
Notes/Tags/Additional Info: ansty, plotty, fragmented af, beta!John, Omega!Sherlock, Alpha!Irene.
Summary: Sherlock got rid of everything that he had ever known about the stars when he was nine years and five months old, which given his plans to be a pirate in the West Indies, the importance of astral navigation for a pirate, and given that he was him, that had been quite a lot. He didn't give away his mariner's astrolabe until much later.

When Irene was ten years old, she fell in love with the most beautiful, perfectly-perfect amoral Omega woman ever. Which is to say, she read Steinbeck's "East of Eden".

John stayed up one particularly nasty March night until 2:32 am reading "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom". Hail rattled against the window. To John, it was the sound of desert sand on dry canvas.

Why I loved it: While I dislike the fics that are not one story and more a bunch of pieces slowly adding up, this is one of the best omega verse fics I've ever read. With whole society, plot and porn parts. And the style of writing is mind-blowing. Some sentences stayed with me forever like the description I added as the excerpt.

Excerpt: Sally would be pretty if she smiled. Angry, she was beautiful.

Teen Wolf

Title: the truth about butts and wolves
Author: verity
Pairing(s): Derek/Stiles, Scott/Allison
Rating: Teen and Up, PG13
Word Count: 4.924
Warnings: -
Notes/Tags/Additional Info: omega!Stiles, secondary!gender!swap, silliness in perfect form
Summary: There was no good way to say it: sorry about your surprise sex swap and your nonconsensual werewolf bite also rearranged your butt plumbing and congratulations, I've probably destroyed your sex life forever were not exactly Hallmark sentiments.

Why I loved it: It's adorable and funny. Makes a nice switch after all the angsty world building of serious fics.

Excerpt: "I got a message." Derek closes the dictionary that Stiles suspects he was only pretending to read for dramatic effect. "Can becoming a werewolf do something to your butt?"

"Yep, that was the message," Stiles says, dropping his backpack at the foot of the bed.

There are way more of those, even in my saved up links, but I am tired and it is late, so for now this is the end.
