Today was a pretty crazy day, hence the SPAM of two entries.
Yesterday my group on the uni decided that they won't make presentation for the first Semiotic of Culture class that we have after the winter break. I felt kinda bad about it, because I like that class. I even thought about making my presentation on that day. It would be rushed and not as great as I hoped, but it would be something. Finally I didn't do it yesterday, because 1) there were supposed to be 3 persons to present and I didn't want to be the nerd that breaks out and is the only one prepared. Loyalty and all that shit. 2) Earlier I made a deal with a girl in my group that we will have our presentations on one day, because our topics were sort of similar (she convents and cosplays, me fanfiction). And I didn't want to be mean and you know, tell her at the last minute that if she wants to do it with me, she has one day. Loyalty and all that shit. I'm a Hufflepuff.
So... Apparently it's not good for you to be a Hufflepuff. I overslept (and I had classes on 11am, so it is kinda weird, but I was really tired and felt bad) and during the time I missed on uni they managed to fuck me over at least 3 times. 1) They got me into one of the extra classes I didn't want to attend (If my other project won't work I may need to, but there was one perfect for my schedule and then they changed it, the fuckers). 2) They set up my English classes on a really sucky hour. (I'm not sure I would be able to stop them, but at least I would try. Oh, hell, at least it's not 8am again). 3) Said girl from my group called an hour and half before the Semiotic of Culture class and told me we're doing our presentation today and that she has a laptop if I will need to show things.
I considered strangling her, but then I decided to do my presentation instead. I had much less gadgets, photos, slides whatever than other two girls that presented, but that's mostly because it's not that easy to show literature. I had a few ideas, but not enough time to try to make them come true. (I wanted to show the bigbang inspirational vid :D) I was going to actually show them a small part from SPN (the one when they talk about slash), but I decided against it, because there was no way to make them all clearly see and hear it, and not all of them know English all that well and I had no subtitles, etc etc etc. So I had no new great research done, no shiny things to show them and distract them, and about 15 minutes to talk about the cultural phenomena of fanfiction.
I had two pages with printed some words to explain, what is fanfiction and headers of the stories to know that i should tell them how the stories are labeled etc etc. Most of it in English. And I talked for more than 15 minutes.
I talked about what fanfiction is, how the owners of the orginal stories react to fanfiction, what are the types of fanfiction, what's most popular, what are some important words you need to understand to check out the stories, how we occasionally actually write for profit, and what I do write about. Yep, my class now whole know that I'm a slasher in the middle of writing J2 bigbang story.
It was one huge mess and if I had more time I would've done it much better and took more time to talk about what prof wanted to talk about which is why people are doing it, why they start, why are they so obssessed etc. But considering I had so little time to prepare it and present it? I think I've done awesomly. And you know what? It felt great too.
People were asking me questions and I knew the answers to all of them and I explained things to them. On guy started asking me some slightly more detailed questions about x-files and Lone Gunmen, and books to x-files (mostly it was curiosity if they started from another show are they fandom things or not?) and I talked like a fucking expert. They asked me if there are fics to many different things and I told them there are fics to pretty much anything. They kept asking, my prof asked for some philosophical texts, I said it probably could be find - and if note, then wrote. I told them if there are fics to Bible there are fics to everything.
Apparently that stuck with them, cause when I turned to write something on the board they suddenly asked what are they writing about in biblical fics. So I told them about angel porn, how it usually starts by some series, etc, and my prof interrupted me and said, "Yeah, okay, they mix it with shows, but what about true bible? Jesus? Where there is a slash?" And I told them about Jesus and apostles slashes. I think I permanently messed his psyche. I think he liked it. And I think it's just fair with how he messed up mine with all the texts he told us to read.
Later another girl was talking about Twilight, because her sister is a crazy fan of the series, so she could observe the phenomena from the side. And I was treated as an expert on all fandoms and I was talking about crazy fans. I didn't get to talk about Edward/Jacob, because upon seeing one of the posters my prof decided it's a slash XD Well, okay, there was a poster with Edward, Jacob and Bella really close and I said: Threesome! pretty loudly and he started laughing, looking at that and saying they're kinda threesome-like and then he said the guys are slash. I'd like to point out that I apparently messed up the craziest prof we have here. I'm so proud of myself.
So yeah, it was crazy and I didn't feel all that great, because I heard how people reacted to the presentation about convents and cosplays. And some of them were totally ignoring me, when I was talking (and those were people I'm not really cool with anyway most of the times). So I pretty much was sure I was going to get labeled as a total freak and mocked by the whole group. Not that it ever stopped me, but you know, not the coolest setting for presentation. As it turned out most of them at least listened to parts of my chaotic presentations, some of them asked questions to learn and understand more. I saw that at least few of them wrote down the links to the sites I suggested for them to go hunt for the fics. One of them promised me she will check those out, and she was the same one who told me, she didn't like the idea of conventions and cosplays. And if that's not a win, I don't know what is.
