THEN

4 and 6

The four year old kid is standing on the porch. His eyes big and frightened, his hair sticking in all directions as if he just got up from bed in his Batman PJs. The man standing behind him looks grim and Uriel is a bit scared of him, but his father welcomes him.

“There was a fire,” says the stranger and gulps, as if by saying about fire he avoided saying about much worse things. “I need to find this thing that killed her. I can’t… I can’t take Cass with me.”

“Don’t worry about it,” Uriel’s dad petted kid’s hair and coerced him to get inside the house. “He may stay. He’ll be safe here. You know I wouldn’t let the kids get anywhere close the hunt… and if I did, Rachel would’ve ripped me a new one.”

The other hunter nodded, obviously pleased with this sort of promise. He looked once again at his son, who was staring at him almost not blinking. He nodded again and turned back, moving away without another word.

Cass made a small distressed sound and Uriel took him upstairs, hoping his great, blue teddy-bear that was higher than any of them, would be enough to calm the boy down. The bear smelled like flowers and freshness, and mum’s perfumes. Cass smelled like ashes, fire and fear. Uriel thought it was a really weird mix.

6 and 8

They weren’t kids anymore… Well, Uriel wasn’t, Cass was still six, for God’s sake. And really, taking him hunting after they finally stopped visiting mum in the hospital was a really dumb thing to do in Uriel’s opinion. On the other hand they couldn’t just left him there either and no one else apparently wanted him. So Uriel get rid of Mr. Sprinkle, the best teddy bear ever created, and made a place in a car for Cass. Tough he wasn’t best younger brother by a long shot, but Josh - Uriel’s best friend from school - said young brothers never are.

8 and 10

“Your mums were best friends, you know? Before Cass parents moved back to Kansas they were always meeting and talking for hours. They were always having something to talk about… Complaining about hunting husbands, sharing recipes or protective spells… Talking about kids… Together they decided that naming kids after angels will give them extra protection… Shows how much they knew!”

Uriel finally manages to get up from the armchair, his leg still hurting from the place where the damn pixie bit him. Cass’ big eyes finally move from Uriel’s father to catch the sight of the moving boy and he rushes to help him move. Uriel makes them both leave the room, before his father will start on another drunken monologue.

10 and 12

They joined schools in different cities all across the country. The schools were different as were the students in them. In once nobody even blinked at them, in others they were always troubles waiting just for theirs appearance.

When Mike Resterson told Castiel how stupid he is and how Cass and Uriel really can’t be brothers, because Cass is normal and Uriel is a niger, he got his nose broken. And Cass didn’t really regret this, even if he had to clean all theirs weapon for getting into fights.

He never told dad why he got into this fight. He liked to believe that his adopted father would understand and wouldn’t punish him. On the other hand he didn’t really feel like trying out this theory.

Uriel learned despite Cass tries to keep it a secret, because he just went to Mike to punch him for fighting with his little brother. And Mike told him everything and Uriel punched him and punched Cass as well, although obviously with smaller amount of strength.

“I can take care of myself, you midget,” he said and Cass punched him back.

12 and 14

Uriel’s first girlfriend was named Lucy and for some reason Castiel found that hilarious. After fifth or maybe hundredth joke about ‘Lucy-fer’ Uriel really had to punch Cass again. It didn’t help much.

14 and 16

Castiel’s first girlfriend was named Lily, but nobody paid it nay attention, because right after they started going out officially, Uriel went for his first hunt with theirs father. He came back with shiny eyes and his jeans soaked in blood.
Castiel hadn’t remembered ever yelling at theirs father quite so loud.

16 and 18

“You’re not even trying to get to college?”

“Um… no?” Uriel looked at his brother as if he went totally insane. “I’m inheriting family business, so to speak, Cass. I don’t need college for that.”

“It’s Castiel,” mumbled finally younger boy.

“Whatever you say, Cassie-boy.”

“Moron.”

“Midget.”

18 and 20

“Do you really think that after feeding and dressing you, after taking care of you as if you were my own son, I’m going to let you just leave this family? Cass, I’m talking to you!”

“It’s Castiel! And I don’t have to explain myself to you! I don’t wanna hunt and I’m not going to! I’m leaving for college and I’m going to be NORMAL!”

“You ungrateful bastard! You have responsibilities…”

“I have no responsibilities and you can’t make me stay! YOU’RE NOT MY FATHER, YOU SAD DRUNK!”

Uriel didn’t move an inch out of his room, when he heard the loud smack and scarily loud silence afterwards. He heard the thud of the door smashed closed and he didn’t get out to offer his brother a ride. If he was stupid enough to leave he may as well do it on foot. More time to re-think his idiocy and come back.

20 and 22

Uriel got few new scars and salted and burned his father after fail that was his hunt for vampires. Uriel found theirs nest and killed them all. He apparently stole a hunt from another hunter and Gordon seemed kind of a guy, who doesn’t really like such turn of events. Uriel didn’t mind, smacking his head was almost as good as decapitating all of those vampires.

Castiel called a week later to hear Uriel tell him he’s fine.

22 and 24

“I heard some gossip… I think it’s a trace leading to your father… I think he’s closing on whatever killed your mother. I know you swore, you’re don hunting, but I think those circumstances are special.”

Castiel stares at Uriel on darkened stairway and he really wants to tell him that no, nothing changes. He swore done hunting and some two-decades-old revenge hunt is not going to change it… He knows it’s a lie tough, so he just nods and goes to pack himself.

He left to hunt with Uriel and search for his father. They’re three states away from Standford, two hunts already behind them and few old fights between them already settles, when Cass learns about his girlfriend’s death from newspaper.

He mourns Anna and Uriel tries to be there for him, even if he doesn’t fully understand what’s going on and why tw-decade-old revenge hunt is so important now.

23 and 25

“We need to feed the bastard some explosives and blow the hell out of him.”

“I’m not sure I’m comfortable with how much you seem to enjoy this vision, Uriel.”

“Oh, shut it, Midget.”

“Moron.”

26 and 28

In the end it’s Uriel who kills Azazel. Even if theoretically it wasn’t his family the demon destroyed, not originally. He just sort of got dragged into this whole fight and made it his own. There’s blood sliding down his face, when he stands by the car, watches everyone else leaving and Castiel making his way to him.

The smaller man just stares at him for a moment and Uriel thinks about how glad he is that he’s still alive and how he’s going to do absolutely everything to keep him safe. Safe from danger that may kill him and safe from knowledge that he already was dead.

Cass stares at him for a moment longer and than moves closer and kisses him. Uriel just blinks at him for awhile afterwards and then spill his guts as if he was unable to lie to this man.

“I made a deal. They gave me a year. If I’ll try to get out of it, you’ll die, so I won’t try.”

Smaller man kisses him again and then stares at him for a second before nodding seriously.

“We will come up with something,” he sates with conviction and moves around to slide behind the steering wheel.

27 and 29

He yells, he cries, he threatens… He does everything possible to keep Cass from listening to Ruby and using his demonic powers. It doesn’t help in the end much, but Cass starts too late to learn anything useful. He gets under Ruby’s influence… While Uriel goes to hell.

He’s not really sure how it’s possible that that’s when the things really start to get worse.

NOW

2 250 and 30

Uriel straightens his back, trying to not show how nervous it makes him. He doesn’t feel much better when he notices that the… thing that just entered the barn is still slightly higher than him. As if the fact that they couldn’t shot him from anything they owned and he just took out Ruby’s knife that Uriel stacked in his knife wasn’t irritating enough. Uriel just watched as the newcomer pressed two fingers against Bobby’s forehead and made him fall down, lifeless.

“We need to talk, Uriel,” the things glanced at Bobby’s body as well. “Alone.”

“Who are you?” yelled hunter.

“Samuel…”

“Yeah, that much I figured, thank you very much. I meant: what are you?”

Samuel looked at him with big eyes and this innocent look made him somewhat even scarier.

“My name is Samuel. I’m the angel of the Lord.”

Uriel would be damned - again - if he’d admit his fear. He starred at the so-called angel, who obviously awaited some kind of reaction at his admission. Uriel snorted unbelievingly and the angel just sighed.

28 and 2 254

“My brother is right about you,” said Castiel staring at the angel sitting on the couch in theirs motel room, “you are dicks.”

The angel glared at him, even if Castiel was almost sure he could see small hints of smile in the corner of mouths. The second later the slightly higher man was standing right beside the hunter, looming over him.

“You’re stepping over a very thing line, Cass. Some of my brothers may think that you deserve a chance, but I know you’re just a monster and as such you deserve to be treated. Trust me, one word from above, one word, and I will turn you to dust, you hear me, boy?”

The hunter gulped.

“It’s Castiel, you feathery bastard,” he finally spat out finally.
Dean smiled at him coldly. And disappeared in the blink of the eye.
