Lostaway

Since I missed writing about last week's Lost (too buseh, babeh) here is a bonus two-in-one review!

Buh-bye, Locke.

Locke, I believe, is a tragic hero. He wasn't a bad person; he intended the best for himself and the people he cared about, the other Lostaways. He could stalk and hunt boar, he knows the jungle, he can track, he can do all kinds of useful things. But in classic tragic hero style, he has one large flaw which ultimately leads to his downfall; a massive ego that leads him to believe in his own extra-importance, a kind of supernatural importance, putting him above the flow of everyday man. This is what causes him to destroy the computer, to betray his fellow Losties to the Others, to force Sawyer to kill Daddy Locke, and ultimately to intimidate Ben into taking him to see Jacob, which is what leads to his downfall and death. (OK, the island is good with the healing, but people don't seem to heal up from bullets in the chest very easily). It's the most classic of tragedies; a good man betrayed by his own nature.

Further thoughts on this one:

1. Maybe, just maybe, Ben's parents shouldn't have gone on a hike when she was very pregnant? Hmmmm?
2. Ben's dad was a classic arsehole. No wonder Ben is so screwed up. Fathers do tend to be kind of evil in this show, don't they?
3. Getting very, very, VERY sick of Kate sauntering up to everyone and asking "Whatcha doin'? Where are you going? Take me with you. I'm Queen of the Island".
4. Also getting sick of Jack and his keeping quiet act.
5. People who are dead are apparently seen on this island. Maybe there is something making people with sensitive pasts go all doo-lally. At least when it concerns parents or siblings.
6. Is Creepy Richard meant to have never aged at all? I think he is. Creepy!
7. Jacob WTF?
8. Buh-bye, Locke.

N'awwww, Dom and baby! That was just adorable.

Dom did a pretty damn fine job this episode; he pulled out all the acting stops and got me almost teary with all the goodbyes, which were all beautifully done. They really gave him some good stuff to work with. I really thought they might be going to kill Charlie off, and I was very relieved that they didn't. Of course, now I have to worry about him being killed off in a future episode.

I was actually almost at the point of thinking Desmond had it in for Charlie in some crazy way and was going to confess that he'd made the whole thing up because his flashes actually showed him something else and he thought he'd have to kill Charlie for it to happen.

One thing: I thought we had established it pretty concisely in Season One that Charlie can't swim?

Also, where did Sayid's nice little map of the Looking-Glass Station come from?

And who were the women in the Looking Glass? Alice and the White Queen? :)
