Nalo Hopkinson really does have a wonderful way with words and worlds. I'm very fond of Midnight Robber. It's also interesting how she mixes in some interesting takes on Caribbean traditions. Awesome stuff. :)

So much of what Nalo writes is from a mythos completely new to me and that adds a level of enjoyment.

The Trini stuff is fascinating, since I'm just familiar with Cuban Santeria, Palo and Haitian/New Orleans Vodou. There are flavors of Santeria in the Trini path, from what I've heard, but I haven't had the chance to really sit down with somebody from Trinidad to find out details about their path. The saints sound a great deal alike, though.

I've had quite a few people tell me they weren't that into Anansi Boys. I'm not sure what it was about that book. I bought it shortly after it came out, got it signed, and plowed through it within a day, but most people I know seem to have had a problem with it.

For me, I have to like the characters and I didn't. Well, I didn't dislike them exactly but, like I said, I spent a lot of time wanting to slap them.

Black Powder War is next on the stack right after Children of Magic, in which I just finished your oh-so-evilly-wonderful After School Specials. I recently read His Darkest Journey: Theodore Roosevelt and the River of Death. It was a recounting of his journey to map a tributary of the Amazon after he was president of the US. Written by a former National Geographic editor, it had much of that flavor but was still very interesting. A good change of pace from a bit too much so-so fiction lately. Of course after that I got Smoke and Ashes and Regeneration and Jade Throne, etc.

I hear you! I like to throw in at least one non-fiction a month!

I read the first of the Bones books when it came out and may someday read the rest -- although at this point I'd have to reread the first. We're hooked on the series here too!

The Blood series is definitely closer to the books -- given necessary changes for tv.

Hope you're feeling better!

I love the Tempe Brennan books! (Since there're titles like Déjà Dead, Death Du Jour, Deadly Decisions, and Grave Secrets before she starts using "Bones" in every title, I don't call them the Bones books, heh.) In fact, I just started re-reading them last week, but ran into a block when I couldn't manage to get my mitts on Deadly Decisions. I have it on order from Waldenbooks.

You're right about the only things in common with the TV series being the name and occupation. *Roll eyes* Emily Deschanel is a good actress and I enjoy the series, but couldn't they possibly have given her a different name? Maybe made her a cousin? *L*

Though it does amuse me that in the TV series, Temperance's (I've only heard anyone call her Tempe a couple of times) main character in the books she writes is Kathy Reichs. I've never seen them mention it, but it's in the trivia on IMDB.

Thanks for the mini-review of Anansi Boys. I generally love Neil Gaiman's writing as well, but think I will pass on this book.

Your mileage may vary, of course. And I did enjoy the ending.
