So about thirty years ago,
haniaw and I spent a week in Cuba. While she sat in the shade and read, I sat in the sun and wrote a story about the most powerful wizard in the world (when you read that phrase, you should hear Pigs In Space levels of pronouncement)(what? you have no idea what that means... okay, hang on.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reBzU8E_Ajk There you go.)
Later that summer, while sitting around the pool at Spacecon in Wapakoneta, Ohio (home of the Armstrong Air and Space Museum), I showed the story to
maiac and she moved all the commas one word to the left.
I sent it out twice, it was rejected twice, and then I sent it to George Scithers, the editor at Amazing Stories. And he bought it.
Third Time Lucky, a story of Magdelene, the most powerful wizard in the world, became my first professional sale on the 13th of September 1985. If you don't count the two poems I sold to the local paper when I was ten.
Thirty odd years later, and some of those years were very odd, the seven Magdelene stories -- the latest written in 2002 -- are available as an eCollection. It can be yours today for $2.99. Today, March 3rd. Whoot.
"There's a lot of responsibility involved with being the most powerful wizard in the world and Magdelene wants nothing to do with any of it. Lazy, lusty, and more likely to be found laying in the sun than casting runes or sacrificing unfortunate goats, she'd really rather avoid dealing with challenges, errant apprentices, demons, dragons, death, and bureaucracy.
These seven stories include Third Time Lucky, Tanya Huff's first professional sale to George Scithers at Amazing Stories. Thirty years, thirty novels, eighty-three short stories, and one television show later, this is where it all began."
Now, there's two ways you can read the Magdelene stories -- chronologically or the order in which I wrote them. (<--- me not ending a sentence with a preposition)

Because an ebook doesn't allow for flipping back and forth the same way paper does, Lisa at JABberwocky has done an amazing job of creating a chose-your-own-timeline with links that allow you to read the stories in your preferred order. (I keep changing my mind about my preference so don't go by me.) Everyone say thank you to Lisa because this was above and beyond.
