So the_ivorytower asked:

How much research do you wind up doing for your books? Particularly the Confederation books, since there's so much military "stuff" in it? What are the kinds of things that you think to research, and what are the kinds of things you'd *never* think to research, but you get poked about either by your friends, editors, or both? I'm deeply ( Read more... )

Thank you very much for answering my question, and your answer is fascinating!

This is a great post! The part about the "Blood" research made me laugh and I find it fascinating to read about the things that make a book work and how an author gets information on the most obscure things. And it's those small details that make me really love a book, so keep remembering weird things, please. ^_^

I've called up the police station before, too! Sadly, much of the stuff got trimmed. O:( (It was for a RPG supplement about Places Player Characters might wind up...)

Re dead chipmunk: when I was in grad school in Philadelphia one of those, or maybe a young squirrel, died inside my front driver's side car door. (It apparently crawled in via the 2-inch-square vent hole at some point). In *July*. There was no way to get it out without taking a blowtorch to & then replacing the door. If I'd had that kind of money, I'd have spent it on fixing the balky transmission that would go into reverse right away, but had to warm up for 10 minutes before it would go forward.

In short, I lived with that smell for the next 6 months. At least you didn't use your hot tub 5 days out of 7...
