Marathon Weekend - Friday

Oct 21, 2008 21:05

It was a crazy, fun time this weekend. So much happened! Friday....

We arrived really early Friday, we had to be at the airport, checked in and at the gate by 6 a.m. I am not a morning person, it was very difficult to get out of bed at 4-something. Security wasn't a problem and when I got to the gate, LeeLee had saved a seat for me. People were a little crabby as it was quite early in the a.m., but the excitement level seemed to rise once we boarded the airplane.

The flight was unremarkable, and we arrived 20 min. early in San Francisco, got our bags and took a big tour bus to our hotel, a Courtyard Marriott downtown on 2nd Street. Only some of the rooms were ready and unfortunately ours was not one of them, but our friends' was so we parked our bags in their room and headed to Union Square to check in for the race.

On the way LeeLee found a street vendor selling many things, among them finger puppets, and she picked up 3. A Sponge Bob, a Patrick (Sponge Bob's best friend, in case you didn't know) and a black and white kitty cat that she promptly named "Stripey". We continued on to the race check-in, got our goodie bags and bib numbers, then headed to NikeTown for some shopping.

Afterwards we went back to the hotel but our room was still not ready so we went across the street and got some great Indian take-out. We took it back to the courtyard at the hotel to eat where we totally amused ourself with the puppets. Stripey was great as LeeLee could give the puppet any fun personality she wanted, but I felt like Sponge Bob had no choice but to be Sponge Bob, and so declared him as actually being "Sponge Roger", Sponge Bob's Brit cousin.

We seriously cracked ourselves up, me, LeeLee and our friend Meggy. Meggy was there to do some filming for our documentary/film project. So there were 3 of us and 3 finger puppets, and we just had a blast. We took tons of photos of them that I'll post as soon as I figure how to get them off my husband's camera, which I borrowed for the weekend.

We finally got into our hotel room at 3:00 where we went and unpacked, and I did a little updating and blogging for the TNT event, checked work email just to make sure everything was kosher, and sent out some emails to friends and family to let them know we'd arrived.

We hung out in the room for a while, then LeeLee and I went to the Tacos Del Mar up the street for tacos and beer. We took the puppets of course, and continued to amuse ourselves, which went to a whole new level when some cops came in to eat. I suggested we ask them to pose with Sponge Roger and Stripey for a photo, LeeLee was a bit mortified by the suggestion but also intrigued. LeeLee got in the line for some bottled water to go and I had planned to wait until she was done to approach the officers when they approached me, and asked me about the marathon. We actually flirted a bit, and after some humerous and flirty banter we asked them to pose with the puppets. Only 2 of them would and I'll certainly post that photo when I get it! It's a hoot!

That was dinner so we went back to the hotel and watched some TV, blogged, called home, etc. We were in bed with lights out when I got a call from some friends to come down to the hotel bar. I had my pajamas on already so I just threw my jeans on and went downstairs. LeeLee came for a bit but didn't stay long. I do have a pic of me in my pajama top with a drink in hand, will post that one too. Those of us left got to drinking and carousing, and after some time two of us (me and another girl) were singing Karaoke unofficially. Meaning there was no karaoke going on, we were just singing to entertain ourselves. And some of the other bar guests.

One of the bar patrons told us to keep singing, at one point that we stopped, and noting he had a british accent, I asked, "Are you a Brit?" Sure enough he was, so we started calling him Brit John. One of my good friends is from Britain and I was trying to think of one of her colloquial phrases but had a fuzzy brain from the drinks and couldn't remember anything, so I finally just said, "Fish and chips!" My singing buddy promptly picked that phrase up and started shouting, "Fish and chips! Fish and chips!", sometimes followed by a weird "Aurgh!" sound that was supposed to be her McCain impression, and totally laughing. We were all laughing, and then the bar closed.

The group decided to continue the evening elsewhere and left the hotel to look for a bar that would be open later than Midnight, and Brit John went with them. I went up to the room where LeeLee and I stayed up for hours, talking, before we finally made it to sleep.

marathon, nike
