I just saw the film, "An Inconvenient Truth" last Friday, and I strongly encourage everyone I know to see this film. It's a documentary of Al Gore's lectures on Global Warming. PLEASE DON'T STOP READING HERE. This is not the robot-like Al Gore of 7 years ago, and more importantly, this is not a propaganda piece with a political message (a la

When we hear the term "global warming", we automatically relate it to glaciers melting, the usage of fossil fuels, and polar bears losing their homes. Obviously. Where did we obtain this information? *drum roll, please* THE MEDIA!!! When someone goes in and sees An Incovenient Truth and then comes out, he obviously would be changed. If he reads an edition of Time that says, and I quote, "The debate is over. Global warming is upon us- with a vengeance. From floods to fires, droughts to storms, the climate is crashing.", he would then know that since it's in print, it must be true. Devin's not dumb or anything, because there are so many more people like him who haven't done their homework to find out that there actually is more than one side of the story. (And realistically, I don't think it's their fault.) Ever read National Review? What about The Dallas Morning News? These are two excellent examples where one can find alternate (at least to the media's standpoint) views to today's very touchy subjects.
Basically, the previous two paragraphs, summed up, say that if you don't do sufficient research about a topic, you aren't speaking from yourself. You're letting other sources (aka, a movie or a magazine) talk out of your mouth. When you do adequate research, put ideas and concepts together, then say them, you're speaking for yourself.

This movie isn't saying that the end is tomorrow, its simply stating that you need to be more aware of what you are doing. It is very trued that polar bears are losing their home, the glaciers are melting, and a lot is related to fossil fuels. (CO2 makes up less then 1 percent of our atmoshpere, excess CO2 is the problem where radiation comes through the atmosphere. It hits earth and is reflected back, but the extra CO2 keeps some of the extra radiation in which slowly heats things up aka the green house affect.) My point is that people just need to be aware, not scared into believing something. I understand your point of the media having way to large of an effect on people because unfortunetly a lot of people do not think for themselves all the time including me and you. We can continue any arguement forever being that you have been taught to believe a certain way and I taught a different way. We can just end this now with our seperate point of views or if you perfer we can duel it out in an intense game of croquet.

FIrst off you assume that Devin just all of a sudden starting giving a shit about global warming, just because he saw a film.
Secondly, you accuse the movie of over sensationlizing the effects of global warming, now let me ask you, have you seen the fucking film? If not, then you really are in no position to say jack shit about it.
I saw the film with Devin, and drama is something I know more then a bit about, and overly dramatic this documentary was not. It didnt need to tug at heartstrings, the facts that were provided were enough to make any rational person realize that there is definitly a problem. I never really took a big position on global warming either, but after seeing the facts, laid out as well as they were, I am more then convinced that its definitly problem.
Mark, notice the people who deny global warming, are the only people who would lose money and support, if Global warming laws were to be enacted. Now tell me, what do SCIENTISTS and RESEARCHERS have to gain by arguing a theory that may or not exist, well they have NOTHING to gain, so evidently there must be so reason for why such people would carry on about global warming, could it be because it actually IS a serious concern. I dont know about you, but I'd rather trust educated research, then the statment of some Senator, getting cutbacks from Oil companys.
Thirdly, dude you criticise Devin for taking Al Gore seriously, then look who you post as a reference
MICHEAL FUCKING "CONGO" CRICHTON!
Also, just to prove that you are in fact overspeculating, by slamming a film you havent even seen.... The documentary actually DOES show the "other side" of this "debate", and you know what, it shows that there really isnt a whole lot to the "other side" of the issue.
The problem Mark, is that you have this whole misconception that Global warming is a political debate, and thats because the people who would have to pay the biggest price if Global warming was in fact taken seriously, TURNED IT INTO a political debate, simply so they could keep getting away with raping the earth.
Nothing personal against you man, you're a cool guy, but if you are going to criticize someone's beilefs, first off, don't do it on their personal Livejournal (seriously what the fuck makes you think that was at all appropriate). Secondly, present a REASONABLE argument, do not just descredit the opposition, then throw some halfass reference by a FICTION writer, and think its going to fly, cause its not. Thirdly, see the fucking film, BEFORE you make a judgment call on its validity.
The truth is, this documentary was not a 'Farenheit 9/11" for global warming. It wasnt about demonizing the opposition, it was just about proving their misconceptions and pointing out a REAL problem that can actually be fixed, if we just take the time to fucking REALIZE what we are doing. It did not use overdramatization to get its point across, it's message was not overlyexaggerated, and nothing was sensationlized. It was just honest, fact based, truth.
Once again, nothing against you, but its seriously rude to critique a personal LJ entry, yes you were just stating your opinion, but you were also doing so on someone's personal page, WITHOUT their consent to do so.
How dare you accuse Devin of just blindly jumping to conclusions, the man is one of the most sincere people I know, and would NEVER take a side on an argument, if he didnt seriously believe it.
So ya, not to totally put you down, because you're a decent person, but I can not STAND when people just make blind assumptions, espicially when they are false assumptions, about people whom I have the upmost respect for.

I'd love to write more, but I can't. I'm not allowed to post my beliefs in other people's journals.
