Anne McCaffrey died on Monday :( Like, I know there have been some issues with some stuff in her books, and with some stuff she said, and also her past attitude towards fanfic, but you guys, she's been one of my favourite authors since I was ten, and I think the Pern books have had impacts on me that I don't even consciously recognise, not least because eight years later I could be standing in Physics going "Oh, I know about that!" Also, she wrote about strong women and women in charge and women giving no fucks about their supposed gender roles (Lessa is still my favourite psychopath <3), and she gave gay men a role in her military and a place in her world and didn't try to gloss over their existence.
metaquotes is perhaps not the best way to find such things out, but
this story, which the quote came from, is awesome, so that balances it out. Also
the Jezebel article is full of positive comments, and
this just reminds me why I continue to like her even when some of her books are over forty years old.
I could quote Menolly's "Song For Petiron", but I'm not crying; I could talk about her flying with the dragons now, but it seems sort of trite; so I'm just going to leave it at 'And a time to every purpose under the heaven.'
Talking of endings (in the least disrespectful way possible), I closed my
rat_bert tab the other day for the first time in about eighteen months, because it's just not fun anymore. All the discussions seem to happen on twitter these days, and what is posted there has lost all the glee and been replaced with snark and dislike, and I just can't anymore, cause while I might not care that much I still like to keep up with what Adam's up to. So tumblr is now for my Adam needs, and
mcratliffers if for Tommy/MyChem stuff. (\o/ active MyChem fandom! I've spent so long lurking flists I've forgotten how awesome it is to have a community to flail with <3)
And speaking of MyChem:
-
Frank continues to write aborable blog entries -
Gerard continues to make me *chinhands* when he draws -
In Sickness And In Health. I keep saying it, but: bandom fic, I love it. There's something about the humour and the lulziness of these boys that you don't get anywhere else, and alkdjahdhafjdgfsdgfds &BAND;. (also,
outtakes, \o/)
And uh, ahem so, yeah, Ididthebandomvoicememe. I've seen it around a lot in the last couple of days, but this is actually
stolen from rivers_bend. Please to ignore my nervous breathlessness, nervous giggling and nervous shuffling around. Also, this must be the first time I've heard myself for...a while. I thought I'd sound like a ten year old girl version of the Tenth Doctor, but I actually sound more like Eleven, enunciating-wise. Huh.
Bandom voice meme
And now that that's out the way, other awesome things:
- the
fanfilm episode of Supernatural coming out next year that's got GIRL!WINCHESTERS and DRAGONS and was WRITTEN BY NAOMI NOVIK. There is literally NOTHING they could do to make me hate this. NOTHING.
- this series of essays/musings on
shows that sell themselves on the gay subtext but never actually go there,
how slash fandom is, by it's very nature, misogynist,
fandom and women, and
the current crop of YA book series' and their contribution to rape culture. I may not agree with everything said, because I think some fandoms are worse than others at the whole excluding-female-characters thing, but I think it's true that there are very few, if any, fandoms where the femslash outweighs or even equals the slash. (I would love to be proved wrong, obv.)
