Watching the news developments surrounding the middle east, particularly the Iranian drive towards a nuclear program....I cannot help but feel that we will not be able to avoid nuclear war

When I look at the situation in Gaza, I hold all parties responsible.
First, I hold Israel and the Palestinians equally responsible.
Second, I hold everyone who encourages the conflict to continue.
Third, I hold everyone who enables the conflict to continue.
If people REALLY wanted to stop the bloodshed, they'd find a way. Martin Luther King Jr. taught us that. Sure, it will be hard, sure it will painful. But eventually we decide that it's less hard and less painful correcting the underlying causes of the problems than it is to continue the cycle of violence.
One nation is going to have to man up and resolve to not retaliate. As soon as that happens, they win the war. Israel, being the stronger country, should do it. It even has the US to support it. The ex-persian empire is a bunch of second or third-world countries right now. The strongest person must bear the better part of the responsibility, must accept the role of DEMONSTRATING that you're the stronger person. And there is only so far that the strength and compelling power of fear can go. And we long ago reached that plateau in the Middle East. A more powerful force is required to break the stalemate. Maybe not love, but discipline, unity, will-power.
As soon as one country decides not to retaliate, they win the war. can you seriously see the world NOT siding with Israel, for instance, if Israel decided to just start taking rocket fire into their country stoically?
This is a PR war. And that would win the world. Yeah, sure, maybe the region would still be pro-arab, but the whole rest of the world would view Palestine as the enemy. The problem for Palestine is that no one cares about someone suffering cause the world's a tough place. If they did, all of Africa would be in a better way right now. They would need to focus on making public all the oppressive things that Israel does to the everyday Palenstinian person.
Of course, Israel might not be so oppressive if it weren't for the rocket attacks incoming so often...
